Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥

The educational system developed by Uno Cygnaeus combined many of the latest trends and practices in European pedagogy from the late 1800s. Cygnaeus saw that the foundation of the system was high-quality teacher education, which led to the establishment of the Jyväskylä Teacher Seminary in 1863.

The Jyväskylä Teacher Seminary promoted equality in many ways. Both male and female teachers were taught in the seminary, and students were chosen based on their skills and commitment, which lessened the relevance of social class in being accepted as a student. Primary school also became open for all children regardless of gender and social background. To increase linguistic equality, vernacular Finnish was chosen as the language of instruction. The founding of the seminary also strengthened the status of Jyväskylä as the center of Finnish-language education.

The Seminaarinmäki campus highlights the significance of the educational system of Finland and Europe as the foundation of an equal and democratic society. Both in Europe and around the world, the Finnish educational system and teacher training are an inspiring example of an educational system for all. The seminary and its successors, the Jyväskylä College of Education and the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥, have participated in a range of international collaboration to further develop education as well as research in the field.

The Seminaarinmäki area was designed and built to support high-quality teacher training. Over the years, the buildings on the campus have been complemented in line with the development of education and teacher training. With its well-preserved historical layers, the Seminaarinmäki campus is Finland’s best representative of the history of equal education.
