Doctoral students usually have an employment relationship with JYU. In a special case, for well-founded reasons, the first year can be paid as a grant. The following types of grants are available for doctoral students:

1. Grant for dissertation work

The grant is €1,900/month (the maximum amount of tax-exempt grant in 2023 €25,547.52 /year). The grant is intended for starting doctoral studies and conducting full-time, year-round dissertation work in Finland or abroad. As a rule, the grant is awarded for one year.

2. Grant for launching or finishing one's doctoral dissertation (dissertation start-up and completion grants)

The grant is €1,900/month and can be awarded for 1 to 3 months for beginning or finishing one's doctoral dissertation. A start-up grant can be awarded to someone who has worked under another title (e.g. research assistant or project researcher) if the person's previous employment relationship has not been related to the dissertation work.  Dissertation completion grant will not be awarded to doctoral students mentioned in section 1 receiving a grant from the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ or to a person who is employed at the University during the grant period.
