Obtain insurance
Table of contents
All students studying at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ are responsible for obtaining their own insurance. You should acquire your own health, accident and travel insurance before coming to Finland. If you are a citizen of an EU/EEA/EFTA country, you must acquire a European Health Insurance Card from your national health insurance provider.
EU/EEA citizens
If you are a citizen of an EU/EEA country, you must acquire a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) from the local social security office in your home country before coming to Finland. The European Health Insurance Card entitles the holder to health care under the same conditions and at the same cost as people insured in Finland.
However, please note that the European Health Insurance Card is, by no means, a substitute for travel insurance nor does it cover any unexpected expenses (e.g., repatriation, medical transport, or damage to personal belongings). For this reason, we recommend obtaining also private health and travel insurance.

Students from outside the EU/EEA
If you come from outside the EU or EEA, you are required to have private medical insurance:

- If the duration of studies is two years or more, the student must apply for home municipality in Finland at . After getting it, the student is entitled to municipal health care services at the same price as local residents. In such cases, it is sufficient for the insurance to primarily cover pharmaceutical expenses up to EUR 40,000.
You are required to have insurance coverage when applying for a residence permit. The residence permit cannot be granted without insurance.
