In 2024, there will be no traineeship support for traineeships outside the university. The department may have internships positions in research groups for next summer. These will be announced later in the spring.
Degree students in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics can apply for internship positions outside the university or for internships within the department.
Internships outside the university
Please contact the Department of Mathematics and Statistics in advance to confirm the suitability of the internship position. It is recommended to apply for a position even if you are not sure whether you will be granted the department's internship subsidy.
Applications for internships should be sent directly to the employer. Application for the internship subsidy should be submitted to the department.
You can apply for the internship subsidy by filling in an online application form (WEBROPOL form). Application period is between 1 January and 18 February 2024.
After the application deadline, the Head of the Department will decide on the recipients of the internship subsidy and on the amount of the subsidy.
Internships at the department
Internships at the department are intended for students in the advanced studies level. The intern's duties include departmental tasks such as exam supervision.
- Master students can apply for internships in the department's research groups. The applicant must have a thesis topic by the beginning of the internship at the latest. It is recommended to contact the appropriate supervisor before applying to ensure that the thesis is compatible with the work of the respective research group.
- Students at the advanced stage of their studies may apply for an internship position in the department.

You can apply for an internship by filling in the online application form (WEBROPOL form). The application period is from 19 February to 15 March 2024.
The Head of the Department will decide on acceptance and the amount of the salary. After the application deadline, candidates will be informed of the decision as soon as possible.
Internship period and salary/internship subsidy
The internship period is usually 2-3 months and the salary or the subsidy paid by the institution to the intern for an off-campus internship ranges from 1331 € to 1637 € per month, depending on the stage of the studies.
Credits
You can receive credits for the internship (MATS1050 Internship, 5-15 credits or TILS690 Internship, 5-15 credits), of which 5 credits can be included in the electives of the advanced studies in general mathematics or statistics (not applicable to teacher-students of mathematics or students in the LuMO programme). The possibility of substituting studies has to be agreed in advance with the person in charge of the subject (Mathematics: Tuomo Äkkinen, Statistics: Juha Karvanen).
At the end of the internship, the student will prepare a 2-3 page written report, which should include at least the following:
- employer, tasks and duration of the internship
- the nature, quality and amount of supervision
- a reflection on the achievement of the objectives set for the internship and on the appropriateness and meaningfulness of the internship
- an honest assessment of the suitability of the internship position as a future internship placement in your study field
The internship report is submitted to the person in charge of your subject.
