The internship which is part of the studies at the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences (BENS5040, 5-15 credits) can be completed in a wide range of workplaces. You should apply for internships with courage and determination. The department supports students going on internships by providing internship support to the employer to cover some of the salary costs. Unfortunately, the support is not sufficient for everyone. The application deadline for the internship subsidy is annually in January. Information on how to apply and the criteria for awarding the support can be found below on this page.

All students doing an internship sign an internship contract at theInto internship service, regardless of whether you receive an internship subsidy from the department or not. As a student, you start by filling in the form, after which the department completes the form and sends the contract to be signed. Please read the instructions carefully before filling in the form. Once the necessary information has been added to the form, an email should be sent to Tiina Hakanen. 

The application period for the department's internship subsidies for 2025 will close on 31.1.2025. A possible application period for any unused subsidies will be announced separately.

• Internship subsidies are granted based on study progress.
• Once you know the decision, check out the available internship positions, for example, on Jobteaser, or contact a potential employer directly.
• Send your application to the employer. If you have been granted a subsidy by the department, attach a decision letter from the department to your application. If you are unsure about the suitability of your internship to your field of study, please discuss about it with the contact person of your Master's degree programme or your HOPS advisor.
• You can apply for available internships at any time, even without the department's subsidy. In this case, be sure to mention the lack of the subsidy to the employer.
• Once you have been selected for the internship position, make an internship contract at the Into Internship Service. Submit a written study plan for the internship to the return box in the Moodle work space of the internship course BENS5040. After the internship you are required to also submit a report of your internship work to the Moodle work space so that study credits can be awarded.
• All students doing an internship sign an internship contract, regardless of whether you receive an internship subsidy from the department or not. This is done at the Into internship service. Once you have entered the required information in the system's form, please send an e-mail to the education coordinator Tiina Hakanen tiina.m.hakanen@jyu.fi for further processing. Tiina will also advise you if necessary.

You are not eligible for the departmental subsidy for internship if:

• You have already received the subsidy before
• You have already completed the internship course (BENS5040). Students who have completed the course “Working in a research group” (BENS7040) can apply for an internship subsidy.
• You have studied 7 years or more at the university.

The following criteria will be used when selecting the recipient of the internship subsidy:

1. Progression of studies within the target time (bachelor's degree 3 years, master's degree 2 years).
2. Number of credits (with priority given to those who have studied more, taking into account the personal study plan).
3. Bachelor's degree or other equivalent qualification completed.
4. Academic performance. 

The subsidy of internship is applied using . Deadline for the application is January 31, 2025. The amount of the subsidy will be €1400 + statutory salary costs. These will be invoiced by the employer to the university afterwards. The aim is that the total duration of the internship will be three months.

The internships for the entire department are coordinated by Emily Knott.

The Department of Physics offers some internship placements in its research groups. The students of the Department of Physics can apply for these positions. Applications for internships are generally submitted between December and February. It is possible to receive credits for your internship. Enrol for the internship course in Sisu (FYSS9480 Professional Training or FYSS9482 Professional Training Abroad).

Internship subsidy for external internship positions is granted to students who have completed a bachelor's degree before the start of their internship. 

Internship positions

Physics students can apply for internship positions both within the department's research groups and at locations outside the university. The salary for an intern within the department ranges from 1331€ to 1637€ per month, depending on the extent of completed master's studies. In external positions, the salary may be higher.

• Some internship positions for physics students are gathered on a website. The site is more or less bilingual, and information about the positions is given in English when the position is available in English. Internship positions for physics students. 

Internship subsidy

As a degree student at the Department of Physics, you can apply for an internship subsidy from the department for an internship which is done outside the university. The internship allowance is €1500 for one month, and the employer is required to continue paying your salary for at least the second month. Apply for an internship subsidy before you take a position. You can only receive the subsidy once during your studies. You will be notified of your potential subsidy in mid-February and you will receive a written decision which you can present to the potential employer when applying for a position. 

The subsidies are granted on the basis of the following criteria:

• bachelor's degree completed within the target time
• number of credits completed
• academic performance 
   

Apply for an internship subsidy by by January 31, 2025.  

The money for the current year must be spent within the same year. If there is funding left after the first round of applications, the grant will remain available for continuous application.

Internship subsidy

Unfortunately, due to the tight financial situation, the Department of Chemistry will not be able to offer internship subsidy in 2025. For more information on internship-related matters, please contact the Education Coordinator Päivi Lammi or university teacher Elina Laurila.

Including the internship to your degree and getting credits 

It is possible to earn credits for internship positions in your field, either nationally or abroad. In the case of an internship in chemistry, the job title can vary widely, but the work must be related to chemistry. Chemistry teacher-students can earn credits for teaching mathematics and science. The internship cannot be included in other courses or degrees, i.e. the internship cannot be obtained for the same work experience or teaching that was included in other studies.

A month of work corresponds to approximately 8 hours of work per day, 5 days per week. For teacher-students, the work week is 20 hours.

Bachelor's and master's degrees can include a total of 10 credits of practical training. The internship is worth 2 credits per month, or 5 credits per month.

• 2 credits per month requires writing an internship report. Link to instructions below. Credits are registered when the student returns the internship report and it is approved. Enrol in either KEMA902 (bachelor's) or KEMS902 (master's) or KEMS9030 if the internship took place abroad.
• To earn five credits per month for the internship, the student must contact the Vice Head of Education in the Department of Chemistry or the teacher in charge of the course KEMS902 BEFORE the internship starts to agree on their personal learning objectives for the internship. After the internship, you should enrol to KEMS902 course at Sisu and participate in seminars where you will discuss the internship and learn to identify your skills and strengths required in the workplace. In addition, the student will complete assigned tasks related to the seminars. Any questions about this course will be answered by the university lecturer Elina Laurila.
• Internship course instructions by the Department of Chemistry

In 2024, there will be no traineeship support for traineeships outside the university. The department may have internships positions in research groups for next summer. These will be announced later in the spring.

Degree students in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics can apply for internship positions outside the university or for internships within the department.

Internships outside the university

Please contact the Department of Mathematics and Statistics in advance to confirm the suitability of the internship position. It is recommended to apply for a position even if you are not sure whether you will be granted the department's internship subsidy. 

Applications for internships should be sent directly to the employer. Application for the internship subsidy should be submitted to the department.

You can apply for the internship subsidy by filling in an online application form (WEBROPOL form). Application period is between 1 January and 18 February 2024. 
After the application deadline, the Head of the Department will decide on the recipients of the internship subsidy and on the amount of the subsidy.

Internships at the department

Internships at the department are intended for students in the advanced studies level. The intern's duties include departmental tasks such as exam supervision.

• Master students can apply for internships in the department's research groups. The applicant must have a thesis topic by the beginning of the internship at the latest. It is recommended to contact the appropriate supervisor before applying to ensure that the thesis is compatible with the work of the respective research group.
• Students at the advanced stage of their studies may apply for an internship position in the department.

You can apply for an internship by filling in the online application form (WEBROPOL form). The application period is from 19 February to 15 March 2024. 

The Head of the Department will decide on acceptance and the amount of the salary. After the application deadline, candidates will be informed of the decision as soon as possible.

 Internship period and salary/internship subsidy

The internship period is usually 2-3 months and the salary or the subsidy paid by the institution to the intern for an off-campus internship ranges from 1331 € to 1637 € per month, depending on the stage of the studies.

Credits

You can receive credits for the internship (MATS1050 Internship, 5-15 credits or TILS690 Internship, 5-15 credits), of which 5 credits can be included in the electives of the advanced studies in general mathematics or statistics (not applicable to  teacher-students of mathematics or students in the LuMO programme). The possibility of substituting studies has to be agreed in advance with the person in charge of the subject (Mathematics: Tuomo Äkkinen, Statistics: Juha Karvanen).

At the end of the internship, the student will prepare a 2-3 page written report, which should include at least the following:

• employer, tasks and duration of the internship
• the nature, quality and amount of supervision
• a reflection on the achievement of the objectives set for the internship and on the appropriateness and meaningfulness of the internship
• an honest assessment of the suitability of the internship position as a future internship placement in your study field

The internship report is submitted to the person in charge of your subject.
