Student exchange

Take the opportunity to complete part of your degree abroad on a student exchange!

Deepen your knowledge, become fluent in the language and immerse yourself in the culture

How would you like a new environment, a new culture and experiences that you will remember for the rest of your life?  As a student at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥, you have a unique opportunity to do just that - by studying abroad. Abroad, you can acquire knowledge that is not available on your own campus. At the same time, you can achieve the fluency in a foreign language that working life demands. Those with international experience are more employable, better paid and more responsible. Any reasons not to go?

I warmly recommend everyone to go for an exchange! You will develop and learn to trust yourself in a whole new way!

Criminology, Japanese or business management?

All JYU degree students can go on a student exchange. Typically, the exchange period lasts a semester or a year. You can study abroad in your own field of study or in a degree elective. Any course approved by your subject, whether you take it in Berlin or Tokyo, can be included in your degree, so the exchange does not extend your graduation period.

More than 300 destinations. Which one is yours?

Europe, Asia, South America or perhaps the Nordic countries? The Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ has hundreds of exchange destinations around the world. Check the individual exchange programme help pages to find the right destination for you.

I gained great experiences, new language skills and friends from all over Europe.

Applying is easy

Applications are submitted during the academic year preceding the exchange.

  • Application period for destinations outside of Europe: 1.10.-1.11.
  • Application period for  destinations in Europe and additional applications for destinations outside Europe: end of January - beginning of February
  • Additional application period for Erasmus student exchange starting from 1.4.

The application is made by an online application. Selection is based on the applicant's academic performance, motivation and language skills.

The exchange provided an opportunity to learn from more than just an exam book.

You can get a grant for your exchange

Studying abroad is a great financial option: it is free and you can get a travel grant from the university to help with travel costs. During your exchange, you will be entitled to a normal student grant, an increased housing allowance and a student loan. Costs include travel, accommodation, meals, visas and language tests.

Look for a flat and get your papers in order

Host universities assist incoming exchange students with practical matters such as finding accommodation in the exchange destination or registering as a resident. The Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ organises an orientation session every semester to go over the issues to be dealt with during the exchange.

Students employed by the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥

It is not possible to work for the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ from abroad and it is therefore not possible to go on student exchange or an internship abroad while being employed by JYU.

Working for JYU from abroad is considered as remote work, which is not allowed at JYU at the moment, or as a posting abroad, which creates employer obligations and expenses to JYU. The expenses of a posting abroad must be covered by the sending department or faculty.

In addition, according to the Finnish Income Tax Act and the instructions by the tax administration, a person who has a valid employment contract with JYU cannot simultaneously be a receiver of grants from JYU. Thus, Erasmus+ or any other mobility grants cannot be paid to a person who has a full-time-, part-time- or hourly-paid employment contract with JYU. This should be considered when planning short- or long-term mobilities and when applying for mobility grants.
