Scholarship

Everyone selected for JYU's student exchange receives a scholarship for the exchange, which varies depending on the exchange program, the destination and the length of the exchange period. You can see the program-specific grants below.

The grants are linked to the duration of the exchange, not to the completed credits.

Many exchange programs also have additional grants for e.g. students with families or students with special needs.

The scholarship is intended to be paid before the start of the mobility period. Make sure that you do all the preceding steps in Mobility Online in due time so that you can proceed to apply for the scholarship in time. If you did not manage to apply for the scholarship before the start of the mobility period, apply for it as soon as possible. You cannot apply for the scholarship anymore once the mobility period has ended, therefore make sure you apply for it and accept the agreement at the very latest before the end of the mobility period.

Travel scholarship

Each student nominated to student exchange by JYU receives a travel scholarship of approximately 1600-4200 € to destinations within Europe and 1500-2500 € to destinations outside Europe. The exact sum depends on the destination and the exchange period.

Financial aid for students abroad

A student studying abroad is entitled to normal study support if the studies completed abroad can be included as part of the domestic degree. The foreign housing allowance and loan share are increased.

In addition, under certain conditions, you can receive a general housing allowance from Kela for the costs of the apartment remaining in Finland for the first three months of exchange. Housing allowance can be paid for an empty apartment for three months after the month of moving. The condition of paying support for an empty apartment is that you are responsible for the living expenses of the apartment during your absence.

You can get more information about the amount of study support abroad from Kela.

Faculty level scholarships

Faculties may offer scholarships for their own students.

Costs

Students studying abroad are required to cover the travel costs and the living expenses during the exchange themselves. The host universities do not charge tuition fees from exchange students. However, there may be additional costs due to study handouts and books. Please note that if you are a tuition-paying student at JYU, you are required to pay the tuition fee to JYU also during your exchange period.
