Feedback skills

University studies include a lot of self-assessment, peer feedback and feedback discussions. Feedback is needed so that you can work on your texts and communicate more convincingly and intentionally, in order to better identify your own skills and set realistic follow-up goals.

Feedback will help you develop and also appreciate your own expertise. Without feedback from others, you have no mirror to reflect upon your own feelings, observations, interpretations, or evaluations.

What does a successful feedback discussion require?

How do you feel about feedback? Does getting feedback feel like a judgement or more like a gift?
Is the feedback one-way or built together?

  • How you deal with feedback matters. Your attitude affects how you perceive yourself, the other participants, and what kind of  significance you give to the feedback you receive. It also guides your own style of giving feedback.
  • Successful feedback requires sufficient communication skills from all participants. Because feedback discussions often include assessment, they sometimes evoke strong emotions, so in addition to knowledge and skills, there is also a need for constructive approach and emotional control.
  • Feedback is not one-way communication, but interaction where everyone is responsible for how the feedback discussion is structured and how it serves the participants and their goals.
