Guest lecture by Marnix Beyen, University of Antwerp: "The Republic in the Neighborhood: A Local History of National Politics, Paris 1890-1920”

Political representation is not only shaped by representatives, but also by those who are represented. In the book I am preparing, I try to trace the voices of the latter in the letters they wrote to their representatives, and see how echoes of these voices returned in parliamentary discourses. I do so for the Parisian constituencies of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, thus trying to find out to which degree ‘ordinary citizens’ could contribute to the rise of mass democracy.
