5 ways JYU looks out for students' wellbeing

Vereniki Nanou | Master's Student in Educational Sciences

Although studying is very exciting, moving and living in a new country can also be overwhelming. For this reason, JYU aims not only to provide guided assistance to the new students with orientation week and the tutors but also to support students’ wellbeing throughout their studies.

There are different paths that you can take to care for your mental health depending on what you need and what works best for you. Here’s a list of some actions you can take:

1. An online self-help programme

Every JYU student has access to the Student Compass (known as Opiskelijan Kompassi in Finnish, or O.K.), an evidence-based online programme designed to enhance mental wellbeing and study skills. It has been developed at the psychology department of the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ ever since 2011, it is founded on the principles and theoretical framework of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and it offers practical tools for enhancing psychological and emotional wellbeing, addressing motivational challenges, stress-related issues, and promoting overall wellbeing.

The programme is easily accessible online and students can use it anonymously and at their own pace by either following the 5-Step well-being program or choosing from the 70 exercises based on the area they would like to work on.

2. Layered Wellbeing Support Model

The wellbeing team of JYU has created a layered support model to accommodate as many students as possible.

A) Basic support for all consists of courses, online self-help programs, and various activities and events to support wellbeing and learning ability. As a student, you can seek for basic support independently. Although as a student you are very independent, you still get assigned an adviser who will support you in preparing your personal study plan.

B) Supplementary support consists of low-threshold individual and group counselling and guidance. You can contact your tutors or your faculty's coordinators for guidance on the options available. You can also make an appointment with a Goodie - a member of the university staff who is trained to support student wellbeing - if you want to discuss your wellbeing, if you feel stuck in your studies, or if you feel nervous or anxious in academic situations. Discussions are confidential.

C) Enhanced support: It consists of enhanced guidance counselling, which is offered for students who need special guidance. Enhanced guidance is provided by experts specialising in supporting student wellbeing and learning ability. Experts offer both individual and group guidance. You can access the enhanced guidance support only by referral from a Goodie wellbeing adviser, Student's Compass programme's coaches or Finnish Student Health Services (FSHS).

3. Care and Reading Dogs

If studying at home makes you restless or you need to find a new way to focus, get to know our Care and Reading Dogs. You book a time and to pet or study together with your new furry friends. The dogs are also included in certain courses at The Centre for Multilingual Academic Communication and have been a great help for students with performance anxiety.

4. University Sports uMove - find the sport of your choice

Ball games, gym, group exercises and swimming. The best way to wind down after a long day in the library is to have some fun at a dance class, play football or do weight training at the gym. The university has a vast selection of sports activities at an affordable price.

5. Zero tolerance for discrimination

At the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥, we believe that a diverse and inclusive place for work and studying supports the development of our whole community. There is no room for inappropriate behaviour, harassment, discrimination or bullying. Should you face any of the above, please contact the specialist of study wellbeing.
