Winter School in Sport Sciences

The Winter School in Sport Sciences welcomes both international visiting students and JYU degree students to make new friendships, experience the Finnish winter and to learn about the management of Winter Sport Events!
The next International Winter School in Sport Sciences will be organized on 7-17 January 2025 at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥.

Among many internationally highly ranked study programmes offered by the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥, the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences offers a top-quality intensive Winter School in Sport Sciences.

Winter School course

The Winter School 2025 comprises of two courses: RESS2170 Sport Marketing (4 ECTS) and LPE0596 Winter Sports (1 ECTS). The academic part of the course consists of lectures, group tasks and individual assignments that the students will prepare between classes. The course is organized in cooperation with the Football is Medicine -conference. The practical part of the course runs between and after classes. It offers students the possibility to experience traditional winter sport activities (e.g. cross-country skiing, alpine skiing, snow shoe walking) with professional guidance, in an authentic environment. In addition, an attractive social programme is offered. 

The Winter School in Sport Sciences is conducted fully in English. The participants are required to have good skills in academic English. 

Learning outcomes of the course:

After completing the course, students should be able to:

  • explain what sport marketing and sport sponsorship cooperation are, and how they can be used as part of an organization’s marketing strategy
  • know the special features of sport marketing in comparison to other contexts
  • use marketing theories in planning, implementing and analyzing sport marketing strategies classify different theories used in sport marketing studies

Mode of study

Contact teaching in Jyväskylä, 7-17 January: Lectures, classroom discussions, writing and reading assignments, group assignments, and practical winter sport activities.

Participants

The Winter School is intended for Bachelor and Master students, and especially for individuals who wish to understand the areas and objectives of sport marketing, with special focus on winter sports.

We welcome JYU degree students in Responsible Management and Business of Sport (RESPO) and in Social Sciences of Sport and the exchange students of the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences and the School of Business and Economics as well as students from our partner institutions within the Forthem Alliance.

Applying

The next Winter School in Sport Sciences 2025 is offered only to students of partner institutions within the Forthem Alliance, and to the JYU degree in Responsible Management and Business of Sport (RESPO) and in Social Sciences of Sport and the exchange students of the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences and the School of Business and Economics.

JYU degree and exchange students sign up for the courses in Sisu.

Students from Forthem partner institutions apply first internally via their home institution and receive registration instructions from Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ after they have been nominated to the Winter School.
 

Fees

Winter School in Sport Sciences is otherwise free of charge for the participants, but students are expected to pay for the meals themselves. There may be a charge for some optional free-time activities. Students coming from Forthem partner institutions are expected to cover their accommodation and travel costs with the grant received from their home institution.

Accommodation

Winter School participants are responsible for making the accommodation reservations themselves. 

Here are our recommendations regarding accommodation:

  • Time Hostel & Apartments 

Dormitory and private rooms available in a number of locations around Jyväskylä. 
The Time hostel on Vaasankatu 29 is right next to the main campus. Most of the Time rooms located on Hoitajantie 4 are 2km from the main campus. Most of the Time apartments located on Ylistönmäentie 33. Ylistönmäki 33 apartments are located closer to other campuses and a lake but please note that this location is on top of hill. There is one apartment on Vaasankatu, so at the same location where the hostel is, right next to the main campus.

  • Forenom Hostel 

The hostel is located right in the heart of the city centre, under 1km from the main campus.

You can add extra days to your stay if you wish but you will not be able to get grant for those days. 

Mobility grant for students from Forthem partner institutions

In most cases, you will receive a mobility grant from your home institution to cover some travel and accommodation expenses. Please contact your International Office for more details.

We encourage students from the Nordic and Baltic countries to consider choosing Erasmus+ green travel option when travelling to and from Jyväskylä. You may ask your home institutions if they pay an Erasmus+ green travel top-up grant and which are the conditions for receiving the top-up.
