My name is Patricia Gimeno Estivill and I moved from Spain to complete the Master’s Degree Programme in Nuclear and Particle Physics at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥. Before coming to Jyväskylä, I studied Physics at the University of Barcelona. Back then, I already had the hope to become a researcher, and I was determined to move abroad to make it a reality. I had the feeling that continuing my studies in a foreign country would not only open up new professional opportunities but also help me grow personally.
Right after completing my studies in Barcelona, I applied to master’s degree programmes in physics at different European universities, and JYU gave me the opportunity to pursue my career. I did not hesitate much before making the decision to study at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ since I felt very attracted to its excellent physics programme and the high quality of student life in Finland.
Grateful for flexible curriculum and supportive staff
During my studies at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥, I was able to choose the courses that I was most interested in. Although I focused my path completely on physics courses, I was amazed by the freedom of also completing courses from different departments, such as economics, mathematics or even biology; with a flexible curriculum. However, what I am more grateful for is the excellent teaching.
I completed my courses with professors who helped me expand my knowledge and solve any questions I could have throughout my studies. Besides, staff members supported me in each step and helped me in any administrative matter.
I really enjoyed my studies and the process of learning, and I can say the professionalism of JYU was one of the main reasons.
Jyväskylä is a real student city with four seasons
The fact that Jyväskylä is a student city made me feel comfortable from the beginning. There are different faculties nearby which makes it easier to become involved in activities and meet international and local students.
It is true that the Finnish culture can be very different from around the world and maybe shocking for a foreigner, but in Finland everybody is equal and welcome. This makes me to soon feel a sense of cosiness, I would say characteristic of this country.
Besides the culture, the Finnish nature has also amazed me. Winter is cold, but it offers incredible snow landscapes that take the breath away and personally, create a peaceful feeling. Lakes are frozen in winter, and it is really fun to ski or ice skating on them. In spring the snow starts to melt, preparing the city for the green and sunny summer. I have also been delighted by the magical colors of the tree leaves in the fall.
Each season gives special moments, and it is up to oneself to make the most out of it.
Career and personal growth at JYU
When I finished my master’s degree, I took the opportunity to work as a doctoral researcher at JYU following up my master’s thesis. Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ not only allowed me to pursue my dream but also gave me mental growth, taught me to trust small steps and to become more open-minded. I am very grateful for the decision of coming to Finland.
