The Department of Chemistry in brief

The Department of Chemistry studies the composition and control of substances and materials using experimental and theoretical methods.

The Department of Chemistry

Evidence-based knowledge for decision-making and for achieving the goals of a sustainable society.

The Department of Chemistry at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ focuses on high-quality chemistry, basic research and the development of new applications. We educate students with a deep knowledge of chemistry. We are bold and open-minded in our research and value broad interdisciplinary collaboration.

The Department of Chemistry focuses on basic research and education in the sciences. Research and education focus on functional molecules and materials, chemical nanoscience, the circular economy and chemistry education. The Department of Chemistry is strongly involved in the resource wisdom and multidisciplinary nanoscience profiling areas of the Faculty of Mathematics and Science.

The department conducts interdisciplinary research in collaboration with various actors, such as industry, business and the public sector, providing comprehensive and diverse scientific expertise.

Researchers’ Night gives an opportunity for every curious people to learn about what science is and what researchers really do.

The Department of Chemistry employs around 130 people in teaching, research and technical positions, of which one-third are international staff. There are about 350 students. Each year, about 25 master of science degrees and 7 doctoral degrees are completed in the department. The research results are published in high-quality international scientific journals, about 100 articles per year.

We are active in numerous national and international research networks. This collaboration broadens and diversifies our research opportunities and keeps the department at the forefront of research. It also enables the use of new and diversified research methods, promotes mobility and broadens employment opportunities.

We foster a culture of community. We involve students in our activities from the beginning of their studies and provide them with a wide range of support during their studies. We organise regular events for staff to meet colleagues in an informal setting. We work closely with different educational institutions by arranging, for example, on-site visits to our facilities. The department is also involved in the annual Researchers’ Night, where chemistry demonstrations have attracted great interest and enthusiasm from people of all ages.

We help everyone succeed!
