Access and beam time schedule

Current beamtimes schedule, instructions for submission of scientific proposals for beam time and how to gain access to the laboratory.

Beam time schedule

The JYFL Accelerator Laboratory is attached to the Department of Physics of Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥. Services of all laboratories at the Department are available to all users. The Accelerator Laboratory also has close contacts with nuclear structure theory groups (nuclear theory, FIDIPRO) and experts of experimental and theoretical high-energy and materials physics at the Department of Physics.

For questions regarding the JYFL beam time schedule and other inquiries, please contact PAC scientific secretary (beamtime-jyfl@jyu.fi).

User Registration and Visiting Procedure

The Accelerator Laboratory operates an online system to facilitate user registration and visiting processes. At the first stage, prospective users should go through the registration process in order to obtain Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ (JYU) credentials. Once registered, the user can then use our online system to request and register future visits to the facility.

User registration process

When you are planning to visit the Accelerator Laboratory, you should first register as a user of the facility. Your local contact within the Accelerator Laboratory can arrange for an invite link to be sent to you. The registration process requires that the Home Institute Declaration (see below) be filled in and signed by an authorised person from your institute or employer. When you visit the Accelerator Laboratory for the first time after initiating the registration process, you will be required to visit the office in the Department of Physics and present identity documents to complete the process. Once registered, you will be given JYU credentials which can be used in future to request and register visits to the facility.

Request to visit procedure

Once registered as a user and granted JYU credentials, you will be able to log into the online system to request and register a visit in advance of your arrival. The online visit forms include questions concerning your needs to access to the restricted areas, dosimeters, and internet access.

Go to and log in using your JYU credentials. Click "Processes" and then next to "Visit to JYU -request a visit (as a registered user)" - "CREATE NEW". You will then be asked to check that your details in the system are still correct and then to request a visit to the facility.

Access Offered to External Research Groups

The Accelerator Laboratory of the Department of Physics (JYFL) of the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ (JYU) is one of the EUROpean Laboratories for Accelerator Based Sciences (EURO-LABS). Thereby access is supported for eligible external research teams performing or planning experiments at JYFL. They can also apply for EC funding for their related travel and subsistence expenses. Proposals for experiments will be evaluated and selected on the basis of scientific merit through an independent peer review procedure. For research groups with accepted proposals, the research facilities including accelerators and experimental instrumentation are provided by JYFL free of charge. Details concerning the eligibility of research groups can be found on the EURO-LABS web page. All publications resulting from supported work done at JYFL are required to acknowledge the EURO-LABS project:

"This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe Research and Innovation programme under Grant Agreement No 101057511 (EURO-LABS)."

How to apply for beam time?

The Accelerator laboratory opens two calls for proposals a year, with deadlines on March 15th and September 15th.

The submission of the proposals will be accomplished via the JYU VASARA platform. The link for this submission will be shared with the official announcement through the JYFL email list () or by a direct request to the Program Advisory Committee (PAC) scientific secretary, Mikael Reponen. In this platform, the spokesperson(s) will fill the relevant information for the auto-generation of the Proposal Summary Sheet and attach their proposal. This proposal should include an abstract/summary and a justification of the beam time requested, based on cross-sections, detector efficiencies, etc. should be given. If a proposal is the continuation of an existing experimental programme at the JYFL Accelerator Laboratory, a summary of the status of the project should be included. The list of authors should preferably include physicists from the Accelerator Laboratory. Authors of proposals are encouraged to contact anyone at the Accelerator Laboratory for detailed information about the available instrumentation.

If you have any further questions, do not hesitate to contact the PAC secretary (e-mail: beamtime-jyfl@jyu.fi)

Safety in laboratory

Visitors coming for short term work at the accelerator laboratory are kindly asked to follow safety practices.

Safety shoes required in Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ Accelerator Laboratory

Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ Accelerator Laboratory starts enforcing the requirement for safety shoes starting on 1 January 2024.

The Accelerator Laboratory is constantly under development. As new scientific equipment are being built, crane operations, transport of heavy machinery and storage of equipment takes place in the laboratory premises. Also fixed experiments have risks of equipment falling, etc. For these reasons, we are enforcing the use of safety shoes for all staff and visitors in the radiation controlled area of the Accelerator Laboratory. Only visitors on guided tours are excepted.

The visitors can bring their own shoes or use shared safety shoes or overshoes we provide. The safety shoes used must have at least protective toecaps as specified by EN ISO 20345 SB.
