Data Management in Research Council of Finland's 2024 call

Showing good and realistic data management skills and supporting re-use of the data are merits in Research Council of Finland's funding application.

Presenting your Research Data Management plan and skills have changed in the current Research Council of Finland’s (RCF) application. Read and these instructions carefully to ensure proper presentation of your data management issues in the application. If research data management is a new concept for you, please see JYU’s RDM webpages that give both good understanding and university’s guidelines on RDM issues.

At the application stage you’ll have to describe following:

Here only viable options are to use JYU’s or CSC’s data storages that have automatic backups in effect. Using of own devices as primary storage for the data is not wise.
If necessary, you can name some of our system’s to give bit more details and credibility.
- For data that needs to be shared JYU’s Nextcloud cloud storage service
- JYU’s Network drives (S:, U:) for data that is used on premises (campus network) and only among JYU colleagues
- For audio and video, you can use Research Video -service that can store even the most sensitive content.

According to JYU’s research data policy, data produced in this kind of projects is owned by JYU and administered by PI.
In consortia’s, ownership of data will be agreed in the consortia agreement
Any personal data will be handled according to GDPR (participants will be informed and possible need for sharing the data will be included in data privacy notice; same holds true for data controllership)

Describe shortly what parts of your data can be published
- If you cannot publish your data, it might still be possible to archive it to ensure some level of openness and thus enable also re-use of the data which is important for RCF.
- Be credible. Don’t promise to open data that you self-evidently cannot open (e.g. data containing personal information that cannot be anonymized)

Promise to publish metadata of your research data as soon as possible (even before the end of the project) in JYU’s JYX repository
Give some thought where you data will be opened. Field specific repositories (e.g. gene banks or FSD or Language Bank of Finland) are recommended. If publishing in such repositories is not possible, it is always possible to open data in our institutional JYX repository.
Show that you’re making the best possible effort to publish the data. If it requires some specific actions (e.g. anonymization of the data), tell about it.

Tell shortly, why data is so specific (or problematic) that it cannot be reused in any other kind of circumstances.
- It is merit to be able to credibly show that data is so sensitive or e.g. data collection could be endangered, if data would be published. It showcases that you understand core principles of data management.
Remember, not wanting to open the data (and do chores related to opening) is not justification.

PLEASE NOTE that our services are closed during between Christmas and New Year, so contact us well beforehand. We’ll be hard pressed to get your answers or any commentary on your RDM section in January. Questions and requests for comments that have been sent to us on 19.12. or later will be answered 7.1. onwards in the order requests were made.
