Muuttolintujen Kevät - Research for JYU Mobile
Application Overview
Muuttolintujen Kevät (Migration Birds Spring) is a mobile application developed at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥, enabling users to record bird songs and make bird observations using state-of-the-art artificial intelligence. The server-based AI behind the application can identify various bird species. By using the app and identifying observations, users contribute to cutting-edge research. The app is designed for both Android and Apple iPhone smartphones and is available on both platforms' app stores.
Currently, the app identifies 263 Finnish bird species, with its recognition algorithm continually evolving. In the future, Research for JYU Mobile will expand with new and exciting research projects. We remain committed to transparency in data collection and ensuring a secure app experience for our users.

User Identification
User data is not stored directly in the mobile app or background service in plain language. An anonymous user ID is created for each user. Only the user can connect the user ID and themselves as a logical key pair.
Data Collected by the App
Muuttolintujen Kevät mobile app collects bird observations made by citizens. The user's recorded audio file, location data, and anonymous user ID are sent to the servers of the IT Center for Science with the user's permission, where they are stored and analyzed using artificial intelligence. Simultaneously, the recorded audio file is transferred to the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥. Users agree to participate by accepting the terms before sending data for analysis as follows:
"Participation in the study and the use of the Research for JYU Mobile app are voluntary for the user. However, bird identification from audio samples requires participation in citizen science research. The Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ or the participating consortium does not collect participants' personal information. Participants have the option to withdraw from the study without separate action.
The participant who sends an audio sample is responsible for ensuring that the sample does not contain personal, confidential, illegal, or secret information, such as identifiable human conversation. The sender relinquishes all rights to the audio sample to JYU upon submission for research, including the right to share audio samples with a chosen open license in the future.
The study collects the following information from the user: audio file, date and time, location data (exact or approximate), and an anonymous participation ID.
The AI identifies observational data from the audio sample, which is presented on YLE's website. Original audio files may be shared in the future with other research projects conducting species studies or related method development.
