Table of contents
Project description
TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) is an international assessment that evaluates students' knowledge in mathematics and science at the fourth and eighth grades. TIMSS assessments are specifically designed to align closely with the mathematics and science curricula of the participating countries, offering a different approach compared to PISA. The study has been conducted every four years since 1995. Finland has participated in the study in 1999, 2011, 2015, 2019, and 2023. The results of the TIMSS 2023 study were published in December 2024, and Finland will also participate in the upcoming TIMSS 2027 cycle.
The goal of TIMSS is to provide reliable information on students' achievement levels and the factors influencing them. It is not an evaluation of individual students, schools, or teachers, but rather aims to provide an overall picture of the effectiveness of the education system and learning outcomes. The study seeks to understand the factors that affect students' performance in mathematics and science and how these factors can be developed
TIMSS survey is funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥. The study is coordinated by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA). The Institute for Educational Research at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ is responsible for national implementation.
