Project description

The Centre of Excellence in Game Culture Studies

The University of Tampere Game Research Lab (COMS/TRIM), Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ Contemporary Culture Studies and University of Turku/Pori unit Digital Culture teams were awarded by Academy of Finland the Centre of Excellence in Game Culture Studies (2018–2025 CoE program).

Centres of Excellence (CoE) are the flagships of Finnish research. They are at the very cutting edge of science in their fields, carving out new avenues for research, developing creative research environments and training new talented researchers for the Finnish research system and Finnish business and industry.

- Academy of Finland

The new CoE’s have been allocated long-term funding, and the total CoE funding is in multi-million euros range, meaning that there are optimal opportunities for carrying out sustained games research at the highest level over years.

The research into the meaning-making processes, and cultural agency in games and play is organised under four themes:

  1. Meaning and Form of Games (coord. JYU, Raine Koskimaa)
  2. Creation and Production of Games (coord. UTA, Olli Sotamaa)
  3. Players and Player Communities (coord. UTA, Frans Mäyrä)
  4. Societal Framing of Games (coord. UTU, Jaakko Suominen)

Team alumni:
