Optimizing forest industry sustainability with value chain data (OPTIMI 1)

In OPTIMI 1 project, we focus on the emissions in a company’s supply chain, as they are on average 11 times higher than direct emissions and reflect more than 70% of total emissions. The capability to manage these emissions can significantly enhance competitiveness of all parties in the value chain.

Project description

The future customers and investors will place more weight to sustainability in their decision making. We strongly see that sustainability should not only be mandatory actions required by EU directives but a clear business opportunity. The ability to collaborate in sustainability across the value chain will give Finnish companies superior competitive advantage in the international markets.

In OPTIMI 1 project, we focus on the emissions in a company’s supply chain, as they are on average 11 times higher than direct emissions and reflect more than 70% of total emissions. The capability to manage these emissions can significantly enhance competitiveness of all parties in the value chain. However, this requires transparent and reliable data, capability to share the data in business and technical sense, a common definition of sustainability parameter and KPIs, change management in organizations, and support for decision making.

Our research questions are:

  1. What sustainability data is reasonable to gather across whole value chain?
  2. How the quality and confidentiality of this data can be ensured?
  3. How the data can be shared so that the knowledge included in the data can be optimally exploited in production and business processes?

OPTIMI 1 project is a Co-innovation project funded by the Business Finland. VTT coordinates the project and Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ is a research partner in the project. The project partners include Paptic and Ahola Group with their own projects as well as IOXIO, Solita, and Gofore. This is a two-year project (2024-2025).
