New Cultivated Plants on peatlands and biobased side-streams: Production Chains, Valuables and Circular economy (TURBITS)

Table of contents
Project description
The goal of the project is to develop the circular economy of biobased side-streams in a sustainable and responsible manner, to recover organic valuable substances from plant materials and side-streams, to find new and profitable plants with a wide value chain to be cultivated in Central Finland, and to develop methods related to their paludiculture. In particular, during this project, the focus will be on plants grown in former peat production areas, whose value chains will be examined in a comprehensive way, and from the point of view of the recovery of valuable substances, the availability of fiber materials, and the production of litter and growing medium.
In the project, the entire production chain is developed, starting with the work methods related to the cultivation of plants, harvesting and logistics, and ending with the comprehensive utilization of crops for the needs of many different industries. Central Finland in particular has excellent opportunities to produce different types of plant biomass and turn them into products with a high degree of processing, which also have international demand potential. With the project, know-how related to new crops, bio-by-streams and organic valuables will increase and cooperation will become closer.
The project consists of the development project of the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥, the development project of the University of Applied Sciences of Jyväskylä (JAMK Institute of Bioeconomy) and the investment project of the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥. The Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥'s project focuses on the analytics of side-streams and paludicultured plants as well as to the recovery of valuable substances. This focus area is also supported by an investment made to analytics of biomaterials. The development project of the Bioeconomy Institute of the Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences focuses especially on the techniques related to the logistics, harvesting and storage of plants grown in former peat production areas. The project is partially funded by the EU and the funding was granted by the Regional Council of Central Finland. The total budget of the project is around 820,000 euros. Other sponsors are the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥, Neova Oy, Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences and Epira Oy.
