Genetic and Environmental Exploration of Heterogeneity and Causality in Obesity-Physical Activity Associations (GENESIS)

The GENESIS – project investigates the complex interplay of environment, genes and lifestyle on obesity and obesity-related adverse health outcomes. By applying multiomic methods on epidemiological data, it sets the focus of a population-wide phenomenon to individual risk factors.

Project description

Prevalence of obesity and its health-related adverse outcomes is increasing and burdening our health care systems. Our changed environment, characterized by ubiquitous food abundance, reduced physical activity (PA), increased digitalization, and urbanization has been strongly linked to this trend. Yet, genetic predispositions for obesity and PA, making one individual more susceptible for obesity than another, have been widely neglected. Biomarkers for individual obesity risk are needed to improve predictiveness and allow for personalized, non-discriminating health and lifestyle interventions.

The GENESIS (Genetic and Environmental Exploration of Heterogeneity and Causality in Obesity-Physical Activity Association) -project investigates the obesity phenomenon from a broad angle – causes of heterogeneity and its association with comorbidities, causal association with physical activity and gene-lifestyle interactions across the life course.

The study uses multiomic methods on longitudinal biobank and twin data.
