DigiConsumers Project - Improving young people's financial skills in a digitalized consumer society

Do quickie loans, social media, digital payments, and online behavioral advertising increase unnecessary purchases? How do concerns over climate change and the coronavirus pandemic reflect on the consumer behavior of Generation Z? Can teaching economic skills prevent indebtedness amongst the young?
DigiConsumers is a multidisciplinary research project led by Terhi-Anna Wilska (Prof. Sociology) which aims to identify ways to improve the economic and consumer skills of young people ages 13 to 25 (a.k.a “Generation Z” or “zoomers”) especially in a digital world. Led by the discipline of Sociology at the Ģֱ Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy, the consortium also consists of Ģֱ Finnish Institute for Educational Research, University of Helsinki, University of Vaasa, Pellervo Economic Research PTT and Economy and youth TAT. The project will be carried out between 2019 and 2025 and it is funded by the Strategic Research Council (SRC) at the Academy of Finland.
The study in the work package in the discipline of Sociology at the Ģֱ Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy focuses on the impact of social, cultural and cognitive factors on the consumer behavior of young adults between the ages of 13 and 25 in digital environments.
