Biography

I am Full Professor of Journalism Studies at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥, Department of Language and Communication Studies. In 2018-2021 I served as the President of the Finnish Association for Media and Communication Studies. I have a Docentship (Adjunct Professor) in communication studies at the University of Helsinki. I received my doctorate from the Aalto University School of Art and Design, Department of Media in 2010.

Research interests

I have a versatile background from Finnish universities in journalism (Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥), media and communication (University of Helsinki, University of Tampere), visual communication (University of Art and Design and Aalto University School of Art and Design) and organizational communication and management (Aalto University School of Business). I have also made several research visits to the University of Tokyo in Japan.

In my work I can take advantage especially of my expertise regarding the changes in the networked media and communication landscape. I have studied news media from various angles and explored the evolution in different sectors, focusing on online communication, social media, and mobile media. An emphasis in my work is on the contemporary context for journalism, especially new media platforms and social media. A key interest of mine is also the study of media organizations and media management, thereby joining the study of organizational communication with journalism and media studies. Media management is of increasing relevance for media studies, due mainly to the disruption experienced by legacy media organizations.

When teaching journalism students at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ I approach journalism as media work with a rather wide-ranging focus. In the contemporary media environment and journalistic culture, it is essential for journalists to be experts also in other forms of media work than journalistic content production. I consider media work to be of significance also to a much wider array of professions in the media and communications field.
