Biography

Judith Kahamba is a postdoctoral researcher, participating in the research project “Re-articulating citizenship in the times of uncertainty: Hybrid narratives of Covid-19 responses in sub-Saharan Africa, funded by the Academy of Finland (2022-2026)”.  Her major task is to conduct research on the public state discourses in Tanzania.

Judith has experience in teaching, research, facilitating workshops, and providing consultancy services. She has been teaching in the Department of Development and Strategic Studies, at Sokoine University of Agriculture since 2014 and co-caught a Master’s course on Gender and Development to the International Students in the School of Social Development and Public Policy, Beijing Normal University from 2019 to 2021. She is currently engaged in co-teachig a master course "Classics of Development Theory" in the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy, Jyväskylä University.

She holds a Ph.D. in Development Studies from China Agricultural University, China (2018-2022); an M.A. in Management in Contemporary Development from Beijing Normal University, China (2011-2013); and a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics and Human Nutrition from Sokoine University of Agriculture, Tanzania (2007-2010). At the Sokoine University of Agriculture, she worked as an Assistant Lecture from 2014 to 2018 and as a Lecturer from December 2018 to March 2023. 

Since 2014, Judith has participated in various research projects in collaboration with local and international research institutions including Overseas Development Institute and Chronic Poverty Advisory Network (CPAN). She has also conducted different research-related consultancy assignments for local and international organizations. She has conducted research on gender, poverty dynamics, rural livelihoods, Covid-19 pandemic impacts in urban, peri-urban, and rural areas; agricultural/dairy/poultry value chains, and dynamics of public-private partnerships. She has conducted mid-term (monitoring) and final evaluations for the projects and development strategies.

She is a member of board member of the Finnish Society for Development Reseach (FSDR); member of Chronic Poverty Advisory Network (CPAN) Associates; a board member of  Higher Education Resource Services (HERS)-East Africa; a member of AFROHUN One Health Workforce Academy; and a Coordinator of the Center for Gender Studies at the Sokoine University of Agriculture. 

Research interests

Civil society engagement in development, Public-Private Partnerships governance in developing countries; Gender and Intersectionality in development; social policy and political economy analysis—rural politics and poverty dynamics; impacts of crises and climate changes on rural food security and livelihoods; and social protection designs/models relevant for low-income countries.
