Research interests
I am a sociolinguist specializing in English linguistics. My work in this field mostly relates to language contact, in a broad sense, and comprises three main strands: 1) language attitudes and ideologies 2) (pragmatic) borrowing from English into other languages, for example borrowings such as "pliis" and "oh my god" into Finnish 3) heritage languages. A main aim of my research is to create scientifically reliable studies that address societal concerns -- such as the viability and strength of the languages of Finland and Europe in relation to the widespread use of English.
My most recent book, an edited volume, addresses this overall theme: English in the Nordic Countries: Connections, Tension, and Everyday Realties (Routledge 2023, published Open Access).
I am also the Principle Investigator for the Kone Foundation-funded project Language Awareness and Ideologies in Finland (the LAIF project). The main aims of this 3-year project are to address language-related ideologies and attitudes in contemporary Finland to raise awareness about language-related equality and justice. To find out more about the project, please visit our website or contact me directly.
