In the Conferment of Degrees Ceremony, the new Masters and Doctors will be given their degree in the ceremonial act of conferment, and will receive a Master’s laurel and ring or a Doctor’s hat and sword as the sign of it. The events at the weekend will include the Garland Weaving Dinner or the Sword Sharpening Dinner on Friday and the Act of Conferment, procession, church service and dinner and ball on Saturday. Additionally, the promovendi may wish to participate in the cruise on Sunday. Participating in the Conferment of Degrees is a wonderful way to celebrate graduation and the exciting conferment ceremony weekend can be looked back on for years to come.
The conferment of degrees was a great and festive academic celebration that everyone will remember for the rest of their lives. It was wonderful when the masters and doctors got an opportunity to celebrate together.

The Conferrer of Degrees during the upcoming Conferment Ceremony is Professor Outi Merisalo. The Master of Ceremonies is Professor Timo Sajavaara and The Head Marshal is Academy Research Fellow Elina Sillanpää.
Professor Outi Merisalo, the Conferrer of Degrees of the 11th Conferment of Degrees Ceremony of the Ģֱ and Chair of the Conferment of Degrees Committee, explains:
“The conferment tradition in Finland, which is part of the almost eight hundred years old European tradition, emphasises the high intrinsic value of education in our society. The conferment of the master’s degrees is included in the National Inventory of Living Heritage maintained by the Finnish Heritage Agency. The ceremony is internationally unique: with the exception of four Finnish universities, master’s degrees are not conferred anywhere else in the world. The Act of Conferment where the Conferrer of Degrees, as authorised by the University, grants promovendi with the master’s and doctor’s titles is not an ordinary graduation ceremony, but a celebration in which visual aspects play an extremely important part. The white and black clothes of the promovendi, the colourful ribbons of the officiants and marshals, the bay laurels and laurel flowers decorating the hall, the music and the walk of the promovendi to the podium in order to be conferred, all make the Act of Conferment a memorable, comprehensive experience. Masters receive a master’s ring symbolising their broad knowledge and skills, and they are crowned with the laurel wreath of the god of sunlight and the arts, Apollo, while doctors receive a sword and a doctoral hat symbolising the sharpness of their intelligence. The Conferment of Degrees is a celebration of light, hope, and the future, which, through centuries-old traditions, celebrates the impact and power of research. In today’s world, such an empowering experience is very much needed.”
Invitations to the Conferment Ceremony will be sent to masters and doctors who have graduated after the previous Conferment Ceremony. Masters and doctors who have graduated earlier are also welcome to participate. The registration form will be published on the website of Conferment Ceremony:
