Turo Uskali appointed as professor of journalism studies

Turo Uskali has been working as an Assistant Professor of Journalism Studies since 2019. Since 2015, he has been responsible for the bachelor's and master's degree programmes in journalism studies. The Journalism studies programme was established at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ in 1987.
"Journalism studies is one of the most popular degree programmes at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥. University journalism education provides a broad knowledge and skills base for demanding jobs in the media and communications sector. Employment of the graduates has consistently been excellent. In recent years, we have increased our intake of new students at the request of media companies and the university", says Uskali.
In his research and teaching, Uskali has focused on issues such as innovation in journalism and global journalism. For example, he has been an international pioneer in research and teaching of innovation journalism, data journalism, drone and satellite journalism and immersive journalism (the use of virtual and augmented reality in journalism).
Uskali has worked as a visiting scholar at Stanford and Oxford Universities and as a part-time assistant professor at the University of Bergen in Norway.
Currently, Uskali is leading a war journalism study funded by the Helsingin Sanomat Foundation on the Russian-Ukrainian war, and he is researching the digital transformation of the Finnish Broadcasting Corporation (YLE) from 1996 to 2026 as part of the Yle100 history project, a joint project of four Finnish universities.
Uskali has also founded Journalism Research News, an international news service for journalism research. In addition, he is the Media and Communication Studies representative on the Publications Forum's evaluation panel, which annually monitors the quality of academic publications in the social sciences, media and communication studies and other social sciences.
Before his academic career, Uskali worked as a journalist for Satakunnan Kansa, Aamulehti, Helsingin Sanomat, The Finnish Broadcasting Corporation (YLE)/ TV news and Taloussanomat, among others.
