The University Board approved the title of doctoral researcher and confirmed JYU’s participation in the national Digivision 2030 project

The new title will come into effect on 1 March and will apply to the job titles of persons with an employment contract with JYU. The issue has been discussed in the Science Council, University Collegium, the extended management team, the meeting of chief shop stewards and the university community development group. The preparations of the change included a survey, which was answered by 130 doctoral students. As many as 86% of the respondents supported the change. The title is supported by the Finnish Union of University Researchers and Teachers. The English translation of the title will be confirmed later.
“We started to consider the title change based on feedback from the university community,” says Rector Keijo Hämäläinen. “Our aim was to express in the job title that research is the main duty in the position. The University Board sees it important that the job title supports the careers of new doctors so that time used for writing the dissertation is interpreted as research.”
The Board also approved the agreement to participate in the Higher Education Institutes’ Digivision 2030 project. Digivision 2030 is a common project of all Finnish higher education institutions. As a collaboration of HEIs, its purpose is to create a national digital service platform; guidance based on digital pedagogics, the learner’s path and shared data; and build change management support for HEIs by 2030. The Ministry of Education and Culture has awarded the project a special funding of 20 million euros and has allocated over 17 million euros from the strategy funding of HEIs for the project in 2021–2024.
The next University Board meeting will be on 15 March 2021.
