The Research Council of Finland awards €1.1 million to the Accelerator Laboratory

For the Accelerator Laboratory of the JYU Department of Physics, funding was allocated to the construction of equipment used for the production of radioactive ion streams. The Council granted 1.1 million euros to this project. The project period is 1 January 2024–31 December 2027.
By means of the new equipment, it is possible to get access to a large share of nuclei on the nucleic chart and also to various properties of nuclei. The new research possibilities it provides will expand the arsenal of tool and measurement techniques for current users.
“The FIRI funding granted by the Research Infrastructure Committee has been essential in enabling the renewal of research at the Accelerator Laboratory,” says Paul Greenlees, the director of the Accelerator Laboratory. “The established research infrastructures on the FIRI Roadmap have a very long life cycle, even decades, and renewal is made through constant development of state-of-the-art instrumentation and abandonment of older equipment. Without the FIRI funding, the competitiveness of Finland’s research infrastructures would be compromised.”
“From the viewpoint of the Department of Physics, the Accelerator Laboratory constitutes a versatile research infrastructure that has top-class equipment for both basic and applied research,” says Timo Sajavaara, the head of the Department of Physics. “I am happy that we got now funding for the development of long-term research in nuclear physics, so that we can build an internationally inspiring top-class equipment for training a new generation of researchers.”
The Research Council of Finland awarded in total over 22 million euros of funding. These were the final decisions of the FIRI 2023 application round for research infrastructure funding. Overall, FIRI 2023 funding granted for research infrastructure projects was over 52 million euros. FIRI funding supports the construction and development of high-quality research infrastructures as a basis for effective RDI activities. The funding applications were reviewed in international expert panels.
