The Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences at the Ģֱ will host the international symposium Hot Topics in Exercise Physiology on 25-27 September 2024. The latest research to be presented at the event will address current topics such as the effects of low energy availability in sport, sex differences in physiology and the specificities of female physiology in training. The event will bring the world's leading experts and researchers in exercise physiology to Jyväskylä, with over 200 participants from around the world.

The speakers of the event are internationally renowned experts who will share their latest findings and practical applications from the field of exercise physiology.

Dr Tommy Lundberg's presentation will focus on transgender athletes in sport. Associate Professor Dionne Noordhofand Dr Georgie Bruinvels will talk about the impact of sex hormones in women's training. Professors Anthony Hackney and Anna Melin will discuss the effects of low energy availability on the health and performance of athletes. Professor Stephen Cheung will discuss the effects of heat on sports performance and physiological changes.

The event will also bring the latest insights into the functioning of the human body on a molecular level. Professor George Brooks, “the father of lactate”, will be the guest of honour at the event. In addition, Associate Professor Atul Deshmukh will unveil the latest research molecular level findings on muscle and tissue interactions.

A number of foreign speakers will be joined by many Finnish experts from the Ģֱ and elsewhere. For example, Dr Katja øܲԻ, specialist physician in sports and exercise medicine, will discuss training during pregnancy. Exercise physiological hypoxic responses to high altitude training will be presented by Juha Peltonen, Director of the Helsinki Sports and Exercise Medicine Clinic (HULA).

A wide-ranging programme covering topical issues

The symposium programme includes more than 40 oral presentations, three multi-professional roundtable discussions and around 20 poster presentations.

Discussions will cover topics such as the prevalence and prevention of relative energy deficiency worldwide, sex differences in training, and specific aspects of female's physiology from scientific and practical perspectives.

Opportunity for expert interviews

Members of the media are warmly invited to our event, which will provide the latest research findings in exercise physiology directly from the leaders in the field. We are also happy to provide story topics and help arrange expert interviews.
