Professor Gert Biesta visits the Department of Teacher Education as a visiting scholar
Prof. Biesta is Professor of Public Education at the , Maynooth University, Ireland, and Professor of Educational Theory and Pedagogy at the , University of Edinburgh, UK. Biesta’s work brings philosophical insights of many great thinkers back into contemporary discussions on education, draws attention to important questions in education, and interrupts assumptions about education that too easily govern education without addressing the fundamental implications for education.
In addition to editorial roles with the , the , and , Biesta also co-edits two book series with Routledge: (with Stefano Oliverio), and (with Michael A. Peters, Liz Jackson and Marek Tesar). Biesta’s publications indicate the breadth and range of his expertise and interest in education. His awarded publication Beyond learning. Democratic education for a human life (2006) remains the text on democracy and education in the 21st century and is even more relevant today. Biesta’s extensive publications include The Beautiful Risk of Education (2016), The Rediscovery of Teaching (2017), Educational Research: An Unorthodox Introduction (2020), and, most recently, World-Centred Education (2022).
During the 1-month scholarly visit to the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥, Prof. Biesta will be exploring the education question in teacher education from the Finnish perspective. On October 25th a public lecture will be held in Ruusupuisto as part of the Wisdom Lunch Colloquium -series, and the Ruusupuisto discusses -seminar series. On November 8th in Ruusupuisto Biesta will be part of an interactive seminar hosted by GloSEnet - Cultivating Change through Global and Sustainable Education.
