is a secure content management system developed at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ for managing media material during research. Researchvideo 2.0 is the next-generation version of the existing service, and it allows storing and viewing of sensitive media material for research purposes. The technical implementation was carried out by Digital Services, while the service and support will be provided by Open Science Centre.

Secure storage of sensitive research data

The core idea behind the Researchvideo is to create an environment that is suitable for handling sensitive media material. This material should be accessible only to selected project members, from JYU or from partner universities.

The following measures, among others, have been taken to ensure high level of security:

  • A dedicated, separate and very efficient server environment for research purposes on JYU servers.
  • Files, including videos, are encrypted at rest.
  • Materials, user and group permissions are managed through well-defined processes.
  • All transactions will be monitored and logged for later audit needs.
  • Using a secure content management system.
  • Clear guidance and support model.
  • Data privacy measure are described and documented.
  • Researchvideo has been security audited by an external experts.

Additionaly a great deal of effort has been put into the usability of the Researchvideo. There is a clear, step-by-step process for uploading media and performing further operations on it. In the Researchvideo, video or audio can be added under each project and enriched with attachments, text and images.

Automated transcription saves time

A powerful and widely used WhisperX transcription service is integrated into the Researchvideo. Its extensive language model runs locally on JYU servers. The subtitling is of high quality in Finnish, English and over 90 other languages. Transcribing is really fast using our brand new, dedicated servers.

Subtitles can also be automatically translated into English and speakers can be automatically distinguished from each other. Text can be edited flexibly in the browser. The same video or audio file can have multiple subtitle tracks.

This automation will save considerable time from researchers.

Versatile permission management and further development

Researchvideo allows automated and flexible management of groups and users and their permissions.

For example, the content of a research project can only be accessed by named members of the research project. In addition, it is possible to assign rights to only one video or one subtitle, if necessary.

The MFA login is done using JYU credentials. In the future, it will also be possible to connect to external ID providers (HAKA, Google, Microsoft, etc.) thus allowing participants from other organizations.

The Researchvideo has been designed with further development needs in mind. During the test period, several interesting feature requests have been noted and could be implemented in the future. Technology choices have been made with an emphasis on open source components that are free of license fees, so that license costs do not increase as the number of users or the amount of content increases.

I have a research project, how do I get started?
