Mika Lähteenmäki appointed the dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences from 1 January 2024

Lähteenmäki has worked as the Professor of Russian Language and Culture at the Department of Language and Communication Studies since 2014. He has also served as the head of the department since 2018.
Lähteenmäki has worked earlier, among others, as a senior researcher at the JYU Department of Languages in the FiDiPro project, which dealt with multilingualism in Finland, and as a professor of Russian at the University of Joensuu in 2006–2008.
Lähteenmäki studied and completed his licentiate and doctoral degrees at the Ģֱ. He also holds a docentship in Russian at the University of Joensuu.
Lähteenmäki has a number of memberships in national or international expert, evaluation and steering groups. He is also a board member in the Finnish Union of University Professors and the chairperson of the Jyväskylä local chapter of the Union.
Lähteenmäki regards strong multidisciplinary competence and skilful, enthusiastic and committed staff as the best assets of the faculty. The new dean wants to be guiding the faculty to a direction where it will, also in the future, be a strong and influential player in the field of research and education in the Finnish higher education sector and capable of scientific breakthroughs of high international standards in its core fields.
“To increase the attractiveness of degree programmes, we need to create unique and multidisciplinary degree programmes that profile the University, cross the borders of departments and faculties, and respond to varying needs for competence in society,” Lähteenmäki says.
Professor Anne Pitkänen-Huhta will return to her post as the vice dean for education for the term 1 January 2024–31 December 2025. At present, she is temporarily attending the dean’s post. Professor Tapio Litmanen will continue as the vice dean for research and innovations until the end of 2025.
