Kaisa Miettinen and Pasi Raiskinmäki begin as vice rectors, Marja-Leena Laakso continues as vice rector in charge of education

In June, the University Board approved the aims of the three development programmes supporting the University’s revised strategy of “Wisdom and wellbeing for us all”. The three strategic development programmes are focused on the following themes: a strong research university; a university with societal impact; and an internationally attractive university. The programmes are implemented under the lead of the three vice rectors.

Kaisa Miettinen will lead research and doctoral education at JYU. “The important aspects in this position,” she says, “are the development of doctoral education and research conditions in general as well as digitalisation, which makes this development possible. We must invest in researchers and different stages of the lifespan of research. Multifaceted cooperation and encounters beyond the boundaries of disciplines are important here.”
Kaisa Miettinen (PhD) has worked at JYU since 2007 as professor of industrial optimization in the Faculty of Information Technology. Her research includes multiobjective optimization, decision analytics and support for decision-making. Between 2012 and 2017, Miettinen worked as the vice rector responsible for research, infrastructure and the Ģֱ Graduate School.

Pasi Raiskinmäki will lead the university’s societal interaction, particularly in relation to partnerships, research cooperation and innovation activities as well as related work on continuous learning. A clear aim is to enhance our efficiency by utilising national and international RDI activities more actively.
“We will activate and develop our operations in national and international networks and consortiums,” says Vice Rector Raiskinmäki. “Alongside this, we will develop closer cooperation relationships and partnerships with both public and private operators. All this requires that we develop new operating models and take an active approach in stakeholder cooperation.”
Pasi Raiskinmäki (PhD) has worked as the development director of research services at JYU since 2021. Before this, he worked at JAMK University of Applied Sciences. Raiskinmäki completed his doctoral degree here at JYU in the Department of Physics, and he has worked in the same department as well as at VTT as a researcher.

Professor Marja-Leena Laakso is continuing as vice rector in charge of education.
“The new strategy and its three development programmes challenge our efforts in the development of education and teaching in a variety of ways,” says Laakso. “It is essential to promote new kinds of collaboration. This has to do with the enhanced connections between research and education, increasing and closer cooperation between our units (faculties, independent institutes, services) as well as with joint development and stronger strategic partnership with the surrounding society and in international collaborations.”
Marja-Leena Laakso has worked at JYU since 2006 as professor of early childhood education, specialising in child and developmental psychology, and also as the dean of the Faculty of Education and Psychology. Laakso has researched early interaction and children’s linguistic development, and she has also developed methods to support parenting as well as children’s social and emotional skills.
