Groundbreaking, multidisciplinary sustainability study module

A multidisciplinary working group is currently designing a basic studies module on sustainability transition at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥. The 25-ECTS module will be available for all students and enables a deeper understanding of various aspects of sustainability transition. It will provide the necessary knowledge and skills for working as a sustainability expert. The study module also offers an excellent opportunity to integrate sustainability perspectives into one's chosen field.

"Solving sustainability issues requires multidisciplinary skills and knowledge. Therefore, we aim to offer this study module to students from all disciplines. The module will be applicable to both bachelor's and master's degrees, regardless of the degree program," says Mikael Puurtinen, research coordinator and leader of the working group.

Planetary Well-being course required from all future degree students

In addition to the upcoming study module, the "Introduction to Planetary Well-being" course created by the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥'s School of Resource Wisdom (JYU.Wisdom) will become compulsory for all new degree students under the new curricula. This one-credit course explores the global environmental crises of climate change and biodiversity loss, their causes and historical development pathways.

"By taking this course, all new students will gain a basic understanding of sustainability topics. The goal is for students to be able to explain the root causes, mechanisms and potential consequences of climate change and biodiversity loss, and to understand human impacts on ecosystems and the climate," says Puurtinen.

In addition to these basic studies, the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ is also currently involved in the establishment of a sustainability transitions doctoral school, which will enable individuals to study sustainability issues at the highest educational level. JYU.Wisdom will release more information about the sustainability transitions doctoral school and its first recruitments during the spring 2024.
