International Joint Master Degree Program in Radiation and its Effects on MicroElectronics and Photonics Technologies RADMEP offers students good career prospects

First students have graduated from the RADMEP (Radiation and its Effects on MicroElectronisc and Photonics Technologies) program this fall as the Master of Science at the Department of Physics at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥, Finland. The RADMEP program offers a multidisciplinary curriculum that provides the students insights on interactions of radiation with Microelectronics and Photonics. Almost all graduates of the program have found employment immediately after graduation.

The RADMEP program provides the students with 2-year European Master’s Degree studies. The program has received funding from the European Union. Program’s objective is to educate students in advanced technologies, providing methodologies and introducing practical applications for their implementation in a variety of natural and/or man-made radiation-rich environments. RADMEP has two goals: first to improve students career prospects and second to respond to the needs of industry, agencies, and society.

- The RADMEP program offers studies in two EU-defined Key Enabling Technologies – microelectronics and photonics. The main emphasis in these studies is on the effects of radiation when applying these technologies in different radiation environments, such as space, nuclear power plants, and particle accelerators, says Senior Researcher Arto Javanainen, who is the academic coordinator of the program at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥.

The opportunity to choose the best studies from partner universities

Students start their studies at Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ and after first semester they move to Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium for the second semester. Third semester students will spend in France depending on their specialization. At University of Montpellier students study Microelectronics courses and in Saint Etienne at Jean Monnet University they follow courses in photonics.

- The studies allow students to take the most relevant courses in their field from each university. Students also gain experience of different cultures, universities, educational cultures and climates during their studies, explains Javanainen.

After the studies students start the Master's thesis and after two years of hard studying, they graduate.

- The first graduated students presented their theses at Saint Etienne in mid-September. The theses were done both in companies and in university laboratories, tells Javanainen.

The Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ is an ideal learningn environment

This first intake started studies at Jyväskylä in middle of the covid pandemic. Because of travel restrictions introduction week was organized at Jyväskylä. Originally it was planned to organize in France at University Jean Monnet. After the very positive feedback from the first intake of the orientation in Jyväskylä, the program coordination team decided to organize also the other induction weeks in the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥.

- Graduated students are satisfied for the program and their education. They get best out of the program universities. Many graduates have also expressed an interest in returning to Finland during their careers. The experience in Jyväskylä and Finland has been positive, and the students said they have got used to the cold climate and even enjoyed the snow, says Javanainen.

Next application round for the RADMEP program will open at 15th of October and end at 8th of February 2024. Program can offer scholarship for the best applicants but offer also positions for the self-funded students. Program has almost 40 associate partners all around the world.

The RADMEP program is based on a long-standing research partnership with the organizing universities and the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). The planning of the program started in 2019 and a positive funding decision was taken in 2020. RADMEP will continue until 2026.
