From 9.4.2025, student VPN access will require multi-factor authentication – Read the instructions

If you use university services that require you to log in via a student VPN connection, you will need to enable multi-factor authentication (MFA). For VPN connections, multi-factor authentication is done using the Duo Mobile smartphone app. This change is intended to improve information security for students.

You will need a student VPN connection (vpn.jyu.fi/student) to access, for example, home and group directories, some licensing services and Matlab.  In contrast, services such as web-based and O365 services do not require a VPN connection.

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) means authenticating the user logging on to a service using more than just a username and password. In practice, this means that after entering the username and password, the login is verified using a smartphone application (Duo Mobile) that you have connected to the service. The principle is similar to that of logging in to banking services. The purpose of multi-factor authentication is to protect your data and improve JYU's security practices.

Using the Duo Mobile application

You can download the Duo Mobile smartphone app before multi-factor authentication becomes mandatory for VPN connections. Read the instructions on how to deploy the Duo Mobile smartphone app:

From 9 April 2025, when you log in to the VPN, the app will ask you for an MFA in addition to your ID and password. You can enter "push" for the second password, which will send a verification request to the Duo mobile app on your mobile phone. In this case, please go to the application to accept the login. Alternatively, you can enter the one-time password you received from the Duo application in the second password field.
