ENHANCING BELONGING THROUGH MUSIC 

CALL FOR SAFINET MOBILITY GRANTS – SOUTH AFRICA 

The Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ Coalition of Africa Networks (JYU-CAN) invite applications from Undergraduate and Masters students in the department of Music, Art and Culture studies for expressions of interest to take part in exchange program in South Africa. The call is also open to other Masters students that are studying an aspect of Music in their masters program, especially in the context of enhancing belonging, mental health and well-being. 

The call is part of Africa Networks that is supported by the Ministry for Education and Culture of Finland under its Global Internationalisation Programme 2021-2024. The focus of Safinet is on building research partnerships and projects within Safinet scope as well as facilitating joint educational collaboration and capacity building projects.  

In line with the Safinet objectives, the purpose of this call is to promote joint educational collaboration and capacity building of SA HEIs through facilitating students’ mobility and teacher collaboration. We invite applications from JYU students that are interested in student exchange in South Africa.  

Please submit your application by 19 January 2024 through the online submission form (see link in the ‘How to Apply’ section). After submission, you will receive a delivery receipt by email.  The JYU-CAN decision committee will announce the selected students to participate in the exchange visit by or before the 26 January 2024. The selected students are expected to have valid travel passports and should have a valid Covid-19 vaccination certificate. 

 

Who should apply? 

To be eligible, the applicants should meet the following eligibility criteria: 

  • Registered JYU student in the department of Music, Art and Culture for an Undergraduate or Masters degree program.  

  • Other JYU Masters student that is writing a thesis about Music, belonging, mental health and well-being.

The following documents must be attached to the application form: 

  • A motivation letter. 

  • A written task. 

The complete applications with the required appendices shall be submitted through the electronic application form by 19 January 2024 

 

Selection process 

Mobility students will be selected on the following criteria:  

  • Quality and clarity of motivation letter and topical write up 

  • Level of study and course studied 

  • Other criteria as deemed suitable by the academic leaders of SAFINET 

All applicants will be notified of the selections by or before the end of January 2024. 

More information 

The selected students will travel to South Africa from 1-31.8.2024. During their exchange program, the student will spend half the time at the University of Pretoria and the other half at the University of Zululand. The detailed program will be shared with the selected students ahead of time. Each of the selected student will receive a travel grant of 3 000 euros to cover the costs of the mobility. Three JYU students will be selected to participate in the mobility. A certificate of participation will be issued at the end of the exchange. Credits can be discussed with the supervisor/ teachers and award will be based on the agreement with supervisor/ teacher.
