The course helps students to build strategies for the conscious design and development of physical and virtual learning environments, known as schoolscapes. The course raises awareness of the role schoolscapes play in institutional interaction of various kinds: classroom interaction, organizational cultures of communication, and narrated local/national/global history. The course invites students to build a spatial and social understanding of learning, which contributes to the development of original teaching practices focused on interaction, exploratory learning and customised learning environments.

2–6 ECTS credits can be gained with the course. Modules 1 and 2 (1 ECTS each) are compulsory while Modules 3 (1 ECTS) and 4 (3 ECTS) are elective. On completion of the course, the participants will also receive a FORTHEM Open Badge.

  • Module 1: self-study module; completion of 13 of the 21 units on theories and methods of learning environment research and practical examples from several pedagogical and cultural contexts.
  • Module 2: participation in 3 documented reading circle meetings (student-organized work in small groups).
  • Module 3: submission of a brief literature review on a topic related to one’s studies and interests.
  • Module 4: implementing a small-scale team project on a chosen topic; presenting the results in the course conference and in a brief report (c. 8 pages).
