The renovation is based on a vision, which the Ģֱ and the Faculty of Mathematics and Science and University Properties of Finland Ltd, the owner of the real estate, created for the use of facilities in Ylistönrinne in a planning process that started in 2019.

The target is to create an attractive high-profile learning and research environment. The aim is to increase the possibilities of multidisciplinary research, strengthen cooperation between departments and increase joint use of facilities.

The construction work of the multiphase project started in the Nanoscience Center in summer 2022.

Learning environments change – ‘Service street’ a uniting factor

Learning environments will face significant changes in the project and will mainly be located along the ‘service street’ on the level of the third floor.

“There will be auditoriums, lecture rooms, student and academic services, groupwork facilities, other study facilities and a restaurant along the street,” describes project coordinator Jussi Ahokas from Facility Services at the Ģֱ.

Students engaged in planning again

The alteration work will also cause changes in the use of teaching facilities in Ylistönrinne. Some of the facilities will be out of use during the alteration work, in which case teaching will be arranged in temporary facilities and in the teaching facilities of other campuses.

The planning of the learning street has engaged students and their wishes have been heard. Students can still influence in the planning of learning environments in joint development events in 2023

Project timetable:

  • The planning of alteration, maintenance, expansion and renovation work of the Ambiotica building and the expansion work at the entrance of the building of the Department of Physics are still in progress. The work is expected to start in August 2023.

  • The planning of the renovation in the building of Department of Physics will continue in spring 2023. The project is expected to be completed in 2026.

  • The facilities of the Mattilanniemi campus will be waived at the latest at the end of the Ylistönrinne project. According to current plans, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics will move to Agora. The plans and schedule will be specified as the facility plans for the whole University progress.
