Africa Day 2024: Re-thinking African Education systems for the 21st Century

The Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥â€™s Africa Networks will be hosting the Africa Day event on Friday the 24th May, 2024 at the JYU main Library Lähde. The Africa Networks led by academic leaders Professor Tiina Kontinen and Professor Laura Stark, and coordinated by Frank Ojwang has been hosting the Africa Day event since 2022, and this will be third year where JYU hosts the event. In 2023, JYU jointly hosted the Africa day together with the University of Eastern Finland (UEF), University of Helsinki (HY) and University of Turku (UTU). This year, JYU will partner with HY (GINTL-Africa) to bring yet another memorable event. The theme of the Africa Day 2024 at JYU is Re-thinking African Education systems for the 21st Century: Building resilient education systems for increased access to inclusive, lifelong, quality, and relevant learning in Africa. The theme is adapted from the Africa Union theme for the Africa Day 2024.
During this year’s Africa Day event, we aim to reflect on approaches to education through the lens of individuals actively engaged with education-related issues in both Africa and Finland. Planned activities for the event include:
Keynote speeches:
1) Breaking Barriers, Building Resilience: The Role of International Exchanges in Fostering Resilience among African Early Career Researchers
by Dr. Bridgit Muasa from the , Kenya and currently a visiting researcher at HY
2) Cultivating Continuity: Innovative Pedagogies for Sustainable Lifelong Learning in Africa
by Dr. Päivi Hasu from .
Panel discussions: The first panel discussion will focus on Rethinking African education systems for the 21st century, both from Finland perspective and in Africa. The next panel will comprise NGOs actively engaged in implementing education themes in Africa. The NGO representatives will share a practitioner perspective in the conversation.
The scholarly celebration of the Africa day 2024 has never felt this interesting, and the best part is that anyone can be part of this great event from anywhere in the world as it will be held in hybrid format again. The icing on the cake is reserved for the individuals that participate in-person at the event venue during the poster session. The poster session usually gives every participant and presenter of a poster a one-on-one chance to engage and exchange ideas, network and connect. The event is open to all. This is an open science initiative and is open to the Jyväskylä community and everyone that is interested to participate in-person or remotely.
