About 150 new unisex toilets across campuses + a private shower facility in Liikunta
For the past year, the University, in cooperation with the local Student Union (JYY), has been looking into the possibility for unisex WC facilities on campus in order to promote equality. Almost every building will now feature plenty of such facilities, and they will be marked clearly with new WC stickers.
Until now inva-WCs (accessible for people with disabilities) have also served as unisex facilities, but there will now be a wider choice available for staff and others. The change will concern those WCs that have just a single stall. For example, in Agora nearly 30 WCs will become unisex facilities. Every building will still have also WC facilities separately for men and women.
A private shower facility in the ground floor of Liikunta Building is now available in room 163. In addition the inva-WCs in locker rooms are equipped with a shower suitable for private use.
Promotion of equality will continue
As part of the complete renovation of the Library Building even more unisex toilets as well as private shower and locker room facilities will be introduced on the Seminaarinmäki campus. Changes of this kind are often easy to make in connection with major renovations. The renovated Library Building will be opened again in 2021.
According to Markus Kulmala, the social policy coordinator of the Student Union of the Ģֱ (JYY), unisex toilets and private shower facilities are a significant and desired change. “This is a concrete step by the University towards equality,” Kulmala says.
