A new professor Anna Kuparinen brings modelling tools in biological research
With her research Anna Kuparinen has focused on the functioning of aquatic ecosystem and particularly on fishes and their resilience and recovery ability and eco-evolutionary dynamics. Fishes are exposed simultaneously to multiple stressors including size-selective fishing, changes in the environmental conditions, and introduction of novel species to their ecosystems.
Anna Kuparinen is a mathematician and has been working as a researcher at the University of Helsinki and also abroad in Germany, Australia, Canada and United States of America. Year 2018 she was awarded two significant grants, a consolidator grant awarded by the European Research Council and a grant of the Finnish Academy. Kuparinen has been working as an associate professor at the Department of Biological and Environmental Science since 2017.
Modelling tools help to predict changes in the environmental conditions
At the moment Kuparinen’s research focuses on aquatic food webs and their dynamics that arises through multiple species interactions. This research utilized modelling and network analyses tools and combines evolutionary and ecological perspectives.
“For example, we study how reduced population can recover from disturbances and how fishing in particular but also any other mortality of certain species could affect indirectly other species. AT the moment we also study how invasion of a new species will change the whole lake ecosystem”, Kuparinen says.
The primary goal as a professor, Anna Kuparinen identifying the need to increase understanding and use of modelling tools in biological research.
“Biologist with these skills will be recruited to research groups right away. Modelling tools help us to predict how changes in the environmental conditions are going to affect natural populations and what kind of consequences human activities can have. Once we better understand the functioning of ecosystems, we can use natural resources sustainably as well as to forecast the consequences of environmental changes.”
