Education at the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy

You can study with us in a wide range of degree programmes and optional modules that prepare you for specialist jobs requiring up-to-date social science and philosophical skills and knowledge.

The Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy offers courses on current societally important phenomena, including inequality and social problems, sustainability and crises, working life, welfare policies, and currents of philosophical and political thought.

The theoretical and methodological focus of the degree programmes and the unique combination of philosophy and social sciences prepare students for demanding professional roles in a wide range of fields. They prepare students for professional work by fostering critical thinking skills, research skills and knowledge management. There is a growing demand for a broad range of social science and philosophical skills in all areas of work life and society.

The Department offers also specialised training in social work and thematic modules and courses to deepen your knowledge in a specific thematic area, such as gender studies, ethics, violence studies, digitalisation, and sustainability.

Our Degree Programmes

With us you can study in the English-language Master's programme Master's Degree Programme in Development, Education and International Cooperation. This is offered alongside the Finnish programmes in social work and the programme in social sciences and philosophy, where students can major in political sciences, public policy, sociology, or philosophy. Our Doctoral Programmes

You can study philosophy, development studies, cultural policy, politics, social work, sociology, or social policy in our doctoral programmes.

Study Modules

The Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy offers optional modules and thematic modules for degree students of Ģֱ, which help you gain a deeper insight into many current phenomena. We currently offer two study modules in English.
