The Finnish Network for Language Education Policies - Kieliverkosto

A national network for influencing decision-making about language education policies in Finland
Kieliverkoston logo

The Network for Language Education Policies, Kieliverkosto, is an open forum for all who are interested in languages and language education. The network encourages discussion about language learning and teaching, the role of languages in society, language assessment, and languages in working life. Everyone is welcome to take part in this discussion as languages are an integral part of our everyday lives.

The network brings together actors in the field of language education policy, organises events, promotes research and education in the field, and influences decision-making about language education in Finland. Since language education policy is not merely a national issue, the network also seeks international contacts and experiences.

The Network is funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture, and it is coordinated by the Centre for Applied Language Studies, Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥.

Network functions

Ejournal and current issues in language education

Kieli, koulutus ja yhteiskunta – Language, Education and Society is a freely available web journal for short articles on research results and teaching experiments, interviews, policy columns etc.; see .
Additionally we spread information of current news, events and trainings in language education through our website, mailing list, X and Instagram.

Events and trainings

We organize the annual Language Parliament and Kari Sajavaara memorial lecture. We also co-operate with different interest groups to organize events especially for language teachers.

Research and influencing

The main purpose of the network is to influence decision-making about language education policies in a way, which is based on research findings, and on the practical expertise, competencies and experience of practitioners in language education policies. Our expertise is also used internationally e.g. in ECML (The European Centre for Modern Languages) in co-operation with the Finnish National Agency for Education.
