Introduction to the Department of Music, Art and Culture Studies
We are a unique, multidisciplinary research centre focused on solving a diverse range of problems and challenges in a constantly changing world of cultures and communities. Our activities combine human, psychological and technological expertise with both basic research needs and the development of art-based approaches and applications.
Work carried out within the department focuses on creative human behaviour and its outcomes, the exploration of individual, communal and cultural meanings, and the application of knowledge so gained to support well-being and learning.
Mutku trains multidisciplinary professionals for jobs in music and culture. In addition to teachers of music and Finnish and literature, graduates work in organisations and cultural institutions as managers, planners, researchers, cultural producers and entrepreneurs.
The Department's Centre for Contemporary Culture Studies and the multidisciplinary music research are nationally and internationally significant centres of expertise in their fields.
