The focus area on temporal complexity and memory reveals the parallel structures and mindsets that underpin institutions in different eras. Examining temporal layers reveals how institutions contain structures and ways of thinking that carry the experiences of different times. Historians explore temporal layers through studies of conceptual history, institutions, and economics, among others. Historians, anthropologists, and ethnologists alike are interested in the social and cultural nature of memory. Projects use the oral memory method  to analyze, for instance, such issues as migration and immigration and the cultural heritage of industrial communities.
