Electronic examination system for Master's Thesis in Vasara
The Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ will switch to an electronic examination process for Master’s Thesis during 2024. This means that the entire process of submission, assessment, and archiving will be conducted electronically through the Vasara system.
The electronic examination process is currently available for students of:
- School of Business and Economics
- Faculty of Information Technology
- Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences
At the moment, it is not possible to submit double theses, i.e., theses conducted in two faculties, for examination in Vasara. In such cases, please contact the Degree Education Services at tutkintoasiat@jyu.fi.
Students from other faculties will be informed about the transition when it becomes relevant to them.
Until then, follow the specific instructions provided by your own faculty/department regarding the submission of your thesis for evaluation.
Please consider the following before submitting your work and starting the submission in Vasara.
- Make sure you are submitting the final version of your thesis. After submission, no further changes can be made to the work, and the submitted work must be assessed and archived.
- Discuss with your supervisor and ensure that your work is ready for submission.
- Ensure that your work undergoes the Turnitin check according to the instructions provided by your supervisor, before submitting your thesis in Vasara.
- You must be registered for both the thesis and the maturity test implementation in Sisu.
- Your work should be saved in a PDF/A format that is accessible.
- If your thesis is done in collaboration, one of the authors submits the thesis and provides, upon submission, the username of the other author (username@jyu.fi or username@student.jyu.fi). Subsequently, the other author receives an email with a link through which they can approve the submission of the thesis.
- If the thesis done as a pair work, the student returning the thesis to Vasara first selects the openness of the work and the associated licenses. The second student agrees to these while also approving the submission for evaluation. It is advisable for the authors to have a common discussion about this before submission. Read more:
- If your thesis contains confidential background material, it must be removed from the submitted work before it is returned for evaluation.
- The acceptance of the evaluation report and grade will take place in Vasara. You will receive a notification of the completion of the evaluation report in your email.
- The evaluated thesis will be automatically sent to the JYX public publication archive.
- The completion date of the thesis is the date when the evaluation decision is made.

Pre-evaluation and plagiarism check
Before the thesis is submitted to final evaluation, the thesis supervisor conducts the so-called pre-evaluation, during which it is still possible and usually also needful to edit the thesis. The pre-evaluation takes ca. one month. Before being submitted to final evaluation, the thesis must also undergo a plagiarism check (). This is carried out in Moodle. The thesis supervisor will be able to give further advice on the practicalities of the plagiarism check.
Submitting the thesis to final evaluation
When you have received a permission from your thesis supervisor to submit the thesis to final evaluation, please submit a PDF version via email to your supervisor and the study secretary at the same time. Please remember to follow the instructions for the cover page and the abstract, in which the objectives, methods, data, contents, and results of the research are reported, and the other formalities concerning the order of the beginning pages before your body text begins. The thesis templates can be found here.
- Deadline for submitting the thesis to final evaluation if you are planning to graduate in the autumn semester: 9 November
- Deadline for submitting the thesis to final evaluation if you are planning to graduate in the spring semester: 9 May
Please note that you can submit the thesis to final evaluation also before the above-mentioned deadlines (i.e. if you are ready in September or October in the autumn, you do not have to wait until 9 November to submit the thesis). Please also remember to agree on the schedule of submitting the thesis with your thesis supervisor in advance.
Appointment of evaluators and time allocation for evaluation
Two thesis evaluators are appointed by the Head of Department or the Dean, and they will evaluate the thesis and submit their statement(s) within one month of the date of them having received the thesis for evaluation. Please note that in the summertime and during holiday seasons, the evaluation can take a bit longer than a month. One of the evaluators may be, and usually is, the supervisor of the thesis. The evaluators present a joint evaluation or two individual statements, including a suggested grade for the thesis.
A student's right to appeal and the decision-making of the thesis grading
You will receive a copy of the thesis evaluation via email, and you are given three options:
A) Accept the suggested grade for the thesis
B) Return a rejoinder
C) Discontinue the evaluation process
If you accept the suggested grade, you must submit the acceptance in writing by replying to the email. If you are dissatisfied with the grading of the master’s thesis, you may submit a rejoinder in order to have the thesis re-evaluated. Please note that the thesis cannot be edited in any way. The written rejoinder has to be submitted to the faculty within 14 days of the receiving the thesis evaluation. If you submit a rejoinder, a third evaluator may, for a justified reason, be appointed. They will give another, independent evaluation of the thesis. If you are dissatisfied with the grade of the thesis, you also have the right to discontinue the thesis evaluation process. Discontinuation can be done once. After having chosen to discontinue the evaluation process, you may be permitted submit the thesis to evaluation again, provided that they have re-written the thesis at least partly. The sufficiency of the edits is determined by the thesis supervisor. If the thesis is not accepted for re-evaluation, a decision with the right to an appeal will be provided.
When you have accepted their thesis grade, the final decision concerning the grading and approval of the thesis evaluation is made by the Head of Department. This finalises the evaluation process.
Uploading the thesis to the JYX Database (University Library)
It is your responsibility to submit the thesis also to the university library, based on the principle that theses are public documents. Upload the thesis to the database after you have received and accepted the suggested grade (or after have opted for the rejoinder). A student may choose whether they want to upload the thesis to the library database as a version that can only be accessed at the JYU Library or as a version that can be accessed from anywhere online. Please note that you will not get the ECTS credits of your thesis before you have uploaded it to . The grade of the thesis will not show in the database.
Maturity exam
The Faculty policy regarding maturity exams has been updated as of August 2024: international Master’s students in the Faculty no longer have to take an actual exam, but the abstract that is by default included in the beginning of the Master’s thesis acts as the maturity exam, and no separate language evaluation is needed. Thus, when the grade for your Master’s thesis is registered in Sisu, you will also simultaneously receive the PASS mark for the maturity exam with the same date as the thesis.
Finnish students studying in the international Master's degree programmes EDUMA or DEICO (EDU) do not need to complete a separate abstract in Finnish. However, if you are a Finnish student and have NOT completed a maturity exam in your previous studies, you will have to take an actual exam from where the language (Finnish) is evaluated separately. In this case, please contact your thesis supervisor and Laura-Mari (see below) for further instructions.

Tarkastajien nimeäminen, tarkastus ja arvosana
Opiskelija toimittaa lopullisen tutkielman tarkastusta varten ohjaajalle. Liikuntatieteellisessä tiedekunnassa dekaani on delegoinut tarkastajien nimeämisen oppiaineiden vastuuhenkilölle.
Ennen lopullista arviointia tarkastajat voivat antaa kommentteja tai korjausehdotuksia, joiden perusteella opiskelija voi halutessaan vielä muokata työtään ennen lopullisen arvosanan antamista.
Tutkielma tarkistetaan aina vilpin ja plagioinnin varalta plagiaatintunnistusohjelmalla (Turnitin). Turnitin-tarkastus tehdään tehtäväpalautuksena ohjaajan kanssa sovittavalla tavalla (esim. Moodle-ympäristössä). Tarkemmat ohjeet tutkielman jättämisestä plagiaatintarkastukseen saa ohjaajalta.
Vastine tulee antaa 14 vrk:n sisällä tarkastajien lausunnon saamisesta.

Laitoksen varajohtaja määrää kaksi tarkastajaa, joista toinen on tavallisesti työn ohjaaja. Tarkastajien on annettava lausunto noin kuukauden kuluessa siitä, kun tutkielma on jätetty lopullisessa muodossa tarkastettavaksi. HUOM. kesäaikana ja vuoden vaihteessa tarkastusprosessi voi kestää kauemmin, joten varsinkin kesällä kannattaa varautua kuukautta pitempään tarkastusaikaan.

Kemia
Tutkielman tarkastus ja hyväksyminen
Matemaattis-luonnontieteellisen tiedekunnan varadekaani on delegoinut laadittujen pro gradu -tutkielmien hyväksymisen laitoksille. Pro gradu -tutkielman arvioinnista kemian laitoksella päättää laitoksen koulutuksesta vastaava varajohtaja.
- Tutkielman alkuperäisyys tarkastetaan Turnitin-ohjelmallaMoodlessa. Palautusalustan Tarkistuspiste -osiota kannattaa hyödyntää jo kirjoitusprosessin aikana, jotta ei tule lopullisen version kanssa yllätyksiä. Ilmoittaudu Sisussa KEMS9550 Pro gradu -tutkielman toteutukselle, niin pääset Moodleen. Lisätietoa saat ohjaajaltasi.
- Kaksi henkilöä, joista vähintään toisella on tohtorin tutkinto, tarkastaa ja arvioi tutkielman. Mikäli tarkastajana on yliopiston ulkopuolinen asiantuntija, täytyy hänellä olla vähintään ylempi korkeakoulututkinto. Toinen tarkastajista voi olla tutkielman ohjaaja. Tutkielman tarkastajien on annettava lausuntonsa tutkielmasta laitokselle kuukauden kuluessa lopullisesta versiosta.

Nanoscience, Specialisation in Chemistry
The actual assessment process begins with the student submitting the final version to be assessed for Turnitin inspection in Moodle to course space KEMS9550 Master’s Thesis. If the Turnitin report does not give rise to any observations, two reviewers will be appointed for the work by the vice head responsible for education at the Department. Reviewers must fulfill the following criteria
- At least one of the reviewers must have doctoral degree.
- One of the reviewers may be the supervisor of the thesis, but not both.
Usually one of the reviewers is the supervisor of the thesis. If the reviewer is an expert outside of the university, he/she must also have at least a master’s degree.
The reviewers have one month to review and evaluate the thesis. The thesis is evaluated according to the assessment matrix of the department. Reviewers fill the evaluation form ie. give a numerical grade and write a report, and return it to the education coordinator. If the reviewers disagree on the grade, each will write its own report. The education coordinator informs the student by e-mail about the completed assessment. After that, the student has 14 days to react to the assessment, either to suspend the assessment, leave a response, or accept the assessment as it is. If the students do not respond within 14 days, the assessment will be interpreted as accepted.
Suspension of the assessment process or submission of a response are exceptional situations in the evaluation. When time allows, it is always a good idea to have a discussion between the student, the responsible supervisor and the vice head responsible for education at the department in order to find the best way to proceed. The student always makes the final decision on the next steps and is responsible for them.
Suspension of assessment means that the student intends to make significant changes to the thesis and the thesis will be reassessed after the changes. When the assessment process is suspended, the student and the supervisor discuss what concrete actions can significantly improve the thesis. Based on the discussion, the supervisor prepares a document on the agreed measures. The document and the original assessment and evaluation statement form the basis for the re-assessment of the thesis. The assessment process can be suspended only once.
Leaving a response to the evaluation statement means that the student feels that they deserve a better grade for their thesis as it is. In this case, no changes are made to the thesis, but a third reviewer is appointed, who has the assessment and opinion of the previous reviewers at his/her disposal. Following the opinion of the third inspector, the thesis is evaluated by the vice head responsible for education at the department. The grade of the thesis cannot become lower based on the assessment of the third reviewer.
Upon not accepting the new evaluation statement, the student has 14 days to submit a rectification request to the Appeals Board of the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥. The decision of the Appeals Board on the grade is final.
If the student has no comments on the assessment or the notice chain has been completed, the education coordinator prepares the final decision on the assessment. The vice head responsible for education at the department decides on the evaluation of master’s theses. The education coordinator informs the student about the decision and at the same time gives instructions on how to publish the thesis in the JYX publication archive. Publishing the thesis in the JYX archive is a prerequisite for entering the grade of the thesis in the study register and thus also for awarding the degree. The student informs the department's education coordinator about the publication.

Assessment and grading process of master’s thesis
Pre-examination
The student delivers the manuscript of his/her thesis to his/her main supervisor. The purpose of the pre-examination is to make sure that the thesis has proceeded to acceptable direction and that it can be submitted for final assessment as such or with minor improvements. At this stage no grades are suggested. At the stage of pre-examination the thesis is checked with plagiarism detection software Turnitin. The supervisor gives the feedback based on which the student can make improvements and revise the thesis.
Evaluation and grading of thesis
Student submits the final thesis for assessment to his/her supervisor. The thesis must include an abstract (see Abstract). The thesis is assessed by two reviewers, the supervisor and a second reviewer. The supervisor sends the thesis to the second reviewer.
The reviewers give their statement of evaluation and a proposal for the grade within a month and send it to the Vice Head of the Department as well as the student (via email). At the same time, the reviewers inform the student about the possibility to give a rejoinder of the reviewers’ statement before grading the thesis (Degree Regulations of the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥, 36 §). The rejoinder must be given within 14 days of receiving the reviewers’ statement.
If the student wants to give the rejoinder, he/she submits it to the Vice Head of the Department in writing. The assessment process of the master’s thesis is not proceeded until the deadline for rejoinder has expired or the student has announced not to give a rejoinder.
After the deadline for rejoinder has passed or after the student has announced not to give a rejoinder, the Vice Head of the Department decides about accepting the thesis and grading it within a week.

The reviewers give their statement of evaluation and a proposal for the grade within a month and send it to the Vice Head of the Department, education coordinator and the student (via email).
The grading scale of the master’s thesis is 0 - 5 (see the Thesis evaluation matrix). The extent of the thesis is 30 ECTS credits.

Chemistry and Analytics for Circular Economy.
