Timing of studies

The Timeline tab allows students to place the studies included in their study plan on a timeline corresponding to the study time set for the completion of their degree. In the Timeline view, you can distribute studies evenly for the whole timeline of completing the degree. A personal study plan counsellor can view the students' timeline. Currently, comments related to the timing of studies can be written in the study plan comments. See a short video about timing your studies in the timeline view in . (Finnish)

The Timeline tab automatically shows selections made in the personal study plan that was last modified on the Structure of studies tab. If there are multiple study plans, and the viewed study plan is changed on the Structure of studies tab, the Timeline shows selections from this last viewed study plan. The study plan used for the timeline tool can be changed from the upper left hand corner by clicking the arrow icon after the study plans name (My study plan DD.MM.YYYY by default). The timeline only includes courses and possible study drafts selected in the study plan on the Structure of studies tab.

To start timing studies, click the blue Add unscheduled courses to the timeline -bar from the bottom of the Timeline page. This opens a screen in which courses are arranged in modules. This view includes possible study drafts. To place a course or a study draft on the timeline, click the blue arrow icon at the right side of the course box. Then click the period in which you wish to complete the course.

Jakso siirtyy haluamaasi kohtaan ajoitussuunnitelmassa. Jakson ajoitusta voi siirtää viemällä hiiren ajoitetun jakson päälle ja klikkaamalla kolmen pisteen takaa Siirrä ajoitusta.

Course on the timeline

In the Timeline view Sisu shows how many ECTS credits you have scheduled for the term and keeps count of how many credits you have completed. If you want to view the number of ECTS credits in a certain period, zoom the timeline view closer with the + button at the top of the screen.  To see the summer period (Period 5), select Show summer periods

Timeline choices

To add your own notes (e.g. student exchange or an internship), select Add a note in the upper right hand corner. Select the period to which you want to place the note, write the note and then save it. In the Timeline view, you can edit or move your note by clicking the three dots in the note. Remember that your counselor has a right to view the timeline plan and your own notes.

If needed, you can schedule courses to more than one period. You can also have a period without teaching between teaching periods, marked with a dotted line. Mark the start of the first period, click the three-dot button and select Edit duration from the menu. Then you can click the period to a new location in your plan.

Using timing templates

A timing template can be created by study administration staff to plan a recommended completion schedule for degree programmes. You can use the timing template as a basis for your timing plan.  The timing template does not bind you but helps you get an idea of the  progress of studies towards the completion of the degree.

To use possible timing templates, click the blue Timing template button at the left side of the Timeline view. This opens the templates to the left side. If a timing template exists, it can be chosen from the pull-down menu. As a rule, you should use the timing template made for your study group based on the start year of your studies. Click Use template to time all courses that are selected for your plan AND have defined time periods.

Timing template

The timing template organizes timed courses by period based on their level, e.g. basic studies → language and communication studies → advanced studies. If you have already scheduled or completed courses, the use of a timing template does not overrule these selections or any completed studies. Courses timed with a timing template are treated similar to other timed courses: you can remove them and adjust their timing.

If you remove courses or study modules from your study plan in the Stucture of studies tab, they are also removed from your timeline. If you add courses or study modules to your study plan, their timing is not updated automatically. If a new course or study module has been added to the timing template, you can add them to your timeline by selecting the same timing template and adding it to your timing again.

You can discard the use of timing templates completely either by selecting Remove all timings from the timing template panel or Delete scheduled courses in the upper right hand corner. NOTE! This function removes all scheduled uncompleted courses from the timing – including the ones you have timed yourself. You can also remove courses from the timeline one by one.
