Student’s rights and responsibilities

Student’s rights and responsibilities are defined in legislation and decrees as well as in the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ Regulations and degree regulations.

Student’s rights

The Student Union of the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ (JYY) has compiled a comprehensive set of information about student’s rights at JYU. These rights are based on Finnish legislation and the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ Regulations. If you find that your rights have been violated, please contact JYU personnel. In problem situations, you can also get help from the  of the Student Union or your subject association.

The student’s rights include, for example:

  • Right to complete studies in an appropriate order and without interruption
  • Right to get study counselling
  • Right to know in advance a course’s objectives and modes of completion
  • Right to get a justified assessment of a study performance
  • Right to receive study performance assessments without undue delay
  • Right to retake an exam
  • Right to equal treatment and individual special arrangements
  • Right to a healthy learning and living environment
  • Right to study without harassment and discrimination
  • Right to a rest day and sick leave
  • Right to reasonable livelihood in different life situations
  • Right to municipal health services

Student’s responsibilities 

A student also has a number of responsibilities, as listed in the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ Regulations. A summary of a student’s responsibilities is presented below. 

  • Students need to keep their contact information up to date in the .
  • Students resbonsility is to register themselves for courses, exams or events. If you are not able to attend, please remember to cancel your registration. If this responsibility is neglected, the students has to negotiate with the teacher or unit about a new chance for participation. 
  • Student is responsible for their own studies and are expected to proceed in accordance with the personal study plan they have drafted with the personal study plan counsellor. 
  • During study periods students should familiarise themselves with, and also follow, the schedules and practical instructions related to teaching. After a study period is completed, it is advisable for students to check the marks in the transcripts of records and ensure that their study performances have been registered correctly. 
  • In their behaviour and action, students are expected to respect other members of the academic community. This includes honesty, meaning that a student shall not cheat in an exam, use fellow students’ work as one’s own, commit plagiarism or cheat in any other way. 
  • As members of the university community, students are expected to act in a responsible way, develop their competencies and use their creativity, skills, and knowledge for their own benefit and for the benefit of the university community and society in general. Every member of the university community is bound to the university’s ethical principles and should also otherwise promote the jointly agreed goals of the university.
