Credits and evaluation of courses

The Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ uses the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), which is established by the European Commission. The evaluation, grading and appeal procedures of completed course units are regulated by the University’s degree regulations.

Credits and full study load

  • 1 ECTS credit = approx. 27 hours of work
  • 1 ECTS credit = 1 opintopiste, 1 op (in Finnish)

ECTS credits reflect the quantity of work each course requires in relation to the total quantity of work required to complete a full year of academic study at the institution – that is, lectures, practical work, seminars, independent study, examinations or other assessment activities.

In ECTS, 60 credits (1600 hours) represent a full study load for one academic year (30 ECTS credits per semester).

Further information on European Credit Transfer System is available on the  website.

Scales and grades

The grading scale used in the assessment of studies is 0–5, in which the meaning of the grades is as follows:

Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ scale ECTS grading scale
5 (excellent) A
4 (very good ) B
3 (good) C
2 (satisfactory) D
1 (sufficient) E
0 (fail) F, FX

At the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥, each student is graded on his/her individual performance and there is no rule as to how big a proportion of the course participants can be given a certain grade. In this respect, the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ grading is not fully comparable to the ECTS grading system.

It is possible to use the grades pass – fail when assessing practical training and practical courses as well as other similar courses. The grade pass is considered as 3 (good) if it is needed to transfer to ECTS grading scale.

In the assessment of Master’s theses, it is possible to use the grades 0–5 or their verbal equivalents. In the assessment of licentiate theses and doctoral dissertations, it is possible to use the grades 0–5, their verbal equivalents or the scale pass with distinction – pass – fail.

Announcement of the results

The results of completed study units (excluding master’s theses, licentiate theses and dissertations) shall be announced within two weeks of the examination date, or from the date by which an essay, lecture journal or equivalent written assignment was due to be submitted to the examiner for assessment. The time limit does not include periods during which, upon the decision by the Rector, teaching is not arranged. For a specific reason, the head of department may grant an exception to the time limit so that study results are announced within a month of the examination date.

Completed study units must be registered within a week from the announcement of the results. The date of examination is marked as the completion date.

If a student has retaken a study unit and received different grades for it, the best grade is final.
